    Description

Sputnik Sweetheart is the story of a young woman who falls deeply in love, and then mysteriously disappears.

    Summary Of The Book

Sputnik Sweetheart is narrated by ‘K’, a man who is the close friend of the novel’s main character, an intriguing young woman named Sumire. Sumire is an aspiring writer who manages to live off the money her family sends her, as she has simple tastes and few other interests beyond her writing.

As K begins the story, he tells of how Sumire, at age 22, fell madly in love. She is a woman who, till then, felt little in ways of sexual passion as she once confessed to her friend K. But, when she does fall in love, it comes with a passion that threatens to overwhelm her.

This is a love that confuses her, for the object of her passion is a beautiful older woman named Miu. Sumire never had any idea that she might be lesbian, and it is unsettling for her. However, her love is so great, that she changes her entire life to suit its demands.

Sumire is a young woman who usually does not care about her appearance, dressing in heavy boots and oversized coats. But, after she meets the elegant Miu, she begins to change, mimicking the way Miu dresses and acts and speaks.

Sumire accepts a job offer from Miu and  goes with her to Europe. She regularly writes to K, describing their travels across Europe and then finally proceeding to a Greek island. Then, the letters suddenly stop.

One day, K gets a call from Miu, saying Sumire has disappeared and she would like him to come down and help her find the lost woman. As K starts on the quest, he begins discovering strange things that unsettle him.

The plot of Sputnik Sweetheart takes a sharp turn as it opens up strange possibilities, as those that might happen in a fantasy or science fiction novel. Could it really be true, wonders K, as he tries to find his friend Sumire, whom he is secretly in love with, though he never told her that.

    outstanding

I call it the Murakami limbo. Once you start reading his books, his writing becomes so redolent of him, that you just cant stop yourself from reading his work. It is intense and depressing, but it draws you into a world full of dreams. dreaming on and on. entering into the world of Murakami and never coming out. Living in dreams for the rest of time.

    A Wonderful Introduction to Murakami

This is the first time I read a Murakami novel. I can only say that I was not disappointed. It was magical. Melancholic and terse, the story unfolded like a dream. In Sumire, he developed a perfect character whose quirks are nicely balanced with the narrator - K, who is an "average" person, a person trying to juggle conformity with originality. A great modern novel.

    Amazing read!

This has got to be my favorite Murakami book. The story is about three people whose lives revolve around each other but they can never be together, like the celestial bodies floating in space in their own orbits, all alone. The book tells about the characters and their struggles of conforming to the needs of the society and the people they love. But this change is somewhat temporary and unsuccessful which leaves them unhappy and confused. After all, "reality bites".

A bizarre love triangles..mystery...love...lust..nightmare...story is fascinatingand keep the readers till end. The narrator gets sympathy of the readers and so the other characters. one can spend time on this stuff. a superb novel indeed.

An average, and if I may call it boring (to some extent) book

Although the plot sounds promising, there is hardly any atmosphere of suspense or mystery created in it. I was pretty bored towards the end as I was expecting unputdownable page-turner stuff like 1Q84.

This book cannot be compared to the other superb ones (Kafka on the shore, 1Q84) by Murakami.
If you absolutely want to read it as a Murakami loyalist like me, I suggest you rent it. This is definitely not worth buying as a collector's item.

    Good one.

Murakami's brilliance is evident throughout out the novel and the descriptive energy of the dream like visuals, the intimate feelings and the prolonged loneliness of the characters are just top class and so easy to read and relate to. However the climax was a bit disappointing in my personal point of view.

    Trip !

Murakami is always so generous to share his absolute feeling about the characters with the one holding the book. The narration, simplicity, choice of words, situations, places, metaphors, examples, almost everything seems to be right in place. A MUST read. Super !
