The Inception of Gowns

Gowns are said to have originated from the Saxon word gunna. It is usually a loose outer garment that is either knee length or full length, worn by both men and women in Europe (from the early Middle Ages to the 17th century). As time passed, these dresses went on to become women’s garments consisting of bodices and attached skirts. And, long, loose-fitting gowns called Banyans were worn by the men, in the 18th century, as informal coats.

Today, it is said that the gowns worn by judges, academics, and some clergy are direct descendants of the everyday garments worn by their medieval predecessors. The gunna was worn by Anglo Saxon women and is said to have featured a long and loose outer garment. It was also known as a cote, surcoat, or a robe. Theses long garments were also worn by the students who attended early European universities, back in the 12th and 13th centuries. These clothing items and hoods would indicate the statuses of the students. From the 14th to the 17th centuries, the term gowns was used to describe any loose, long, robe-like garments that were worn by men and women.

Around the 1500s, in Italy, these long dresses were also known as camora or by different regional names in various other locations. The appearance of the camora changed as time passed. It started off with a high waist and a low neckline and gradually became low-waisted and high-necked. Italian women wore an overgown that was called a vestito or a roba.

By the late 16th century or so, these garments were not considered stylish in Italy. The only people who sported them were bankers or priests. In the 17th century, women’s long dresses (in American colonies) featured trimming around the neck and down the bodice. Some of the gowns of that time also included borders of silk, ribbons, and other decorations. While working, women in the American colonies sported short gowns. They also wore them as informal clothing during the 18th century. These garments were t-shaped and had side godets to add volume.

Isn’t it fascinating to know that our clothes have a historical past? Now, let’s discuss certain things to keep in mind while shopping for the perfect gowns online.
