    Description

Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman: Adventures Of A Curious Character is a compilation of the conversations that author and Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist, Richard P. Feynman, had with his friend, Ralph Leighton.

    Summary Of The Book

Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman: Adventures Of A Curious Character is an almost autobiographical take on the life of the eccentric author, Richard P. Feynman. The book itself is a simple transcription of the many conversations that the author had with Ralph Leighton. The fact that the text hasn’t been fully edited points to the honesty of the book and the bare, candid account of the various hilarious events that took place in the life of this Nobel Prize-winning physicist.

Many incidents in Richard P. Feynman’s life are light-hearted and talk about his fascination with cracking safes, learning new languages, incidents like the time he painted a naked toreador and even playing on the drums to accompany a ballet.

There are other, more serious anecdotes, however, that detail incidents such as the author’s work on The Manhattan Project, during which time his wife died of Tuberculosis. Another chapter details the time he presented the Wheeler-Feynman absorber theory to renowned physicists Albert Einstein and Wolfgang Pauli.

The title of the book is directly derived from a time the author visited Princeton University. A woman at the university asked the author whether he would like to have cream or lemon in his tea, to which he naively responded that he’d like both, earning the titular response from the woman.

Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman: Adventures Of A Curious Character delves deep into the personality of one of the world’s foremost scientist. In a few instances, Richard P. Feynman describes oddities such as his lucid dreams that had him speaking to his foreign colleagues and perfectly imitating their accents. This was something that the author was unable to do whilst he was awake. The book was first published in 1985 and sold 500,000 copies.

    About Richard P. Feynman

Richard P. Feynman was a world renowned theoretical physicist and a Nobel Prize-winner who played a pivotal role in the foundations of quantum mechanics and nanotechnology.

His other books include The Feynman Lectures on Physics and What Do You Care What Other People Think?

Richard P. Feynman was best known for his work on the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the quantum electrodynamics theory and the parton model of particle physics, which he proposed. He died at the age of 69 in the February of 1988 of two rare forms of cancer and his last words were reportedly that he wouldn’t want to die twice as he found it boring.

    Perfect product!

The first time I read this book ,I was overwhelmed by the simplicity of an intelligent mind. I was 22 then and I presented a copy to many of my friends and had happy discussions over it afterwards. Now, at 74, I am getting a new copy as I can not find my old one that I loved so much. Reading this book is like talking to a long lost friend, you share so much, you think together so much.

    Mr. Feynman was an allrounder

When I picked this book, I thought I would get a sneak-peek into the nerdy scientists lives. But I just realized that not all scientists are nerdy. Mr. Feynman was not only a great scientist. He was multi-faceted.

As you go through the chapters of the book , you realize how witty, humorous, sarcastic and funny he was. I believe he has tried almost everything in life. Music, Drummer, Breaking locks, teaching..Gosh!!This man was super awesome one can only wish to be. He even tricked Einstein's...

    He's Not Joking...most of the time,anyway!

This book will bust your myths about physicists being people with their head perpetually up in the clouds. They are human beings with frailties and emotions just like everyone else. He's a genius alright; but unlike Einstein, Feynman doesn't have the aura of the wise-old-man about him -- which is probably a shame...I wouldn't say he's a philosopher (since he thinks they're "tourists"), but he certainly appears to have turned wiser in his old age. But hey, this book is about his adventures as ...

    To Mr. Abhi

Well Mr. Abhi, first of all you need to know that this book is not supposed be a popular science book. It is simply the stories of Feynman's life. And second of all, from your writing it is quite clear that you don't know or haven't read anything else about Feynman (if you have then its even worse). So keep those dumb opinions to yourself.

the Genius who was a Wizard

There are two types of genius. Ordinary geniuses do great things, but they leave you room to believe that you could do the same if only you worked hard enough. Then there are magicians, and you can have no idea how they do it. Feynman was a magician.
-Hans Bethe (theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate)

This book isn't just for those in the domain of physics....it can be read and enjoyed by everybody. A truly legendary "teacher of teachers", his convivial nature, his gift of exposition, his...
