  • Description

What I Talk about When I Talk about Running, by Haruki Murakami, is a novel that documents the way of life of the author and its effect on his literary career.

    Summary of the Book

What I Talk about When I Talk about Running chronicles the key events in Murakami’s running career. It is not a memoir, as it doesn’t talk about any of his personal details about Murakami, except his life as a runner. He became a full-time writer after experiencing a decent amount of success from his initial books. He also talks about the time he was the owner of a nightclub and how he eventually became a novelist. The initial part of the novel documents Murakami’s preparation for the New York Marathon in the year 2005. He says that he hasn’t been able to maintain a normal diary habitually, but has been religiously updating his runner’s journal. Murakami also recounts particular events like the 62-mile ultra-marathon in Japan, and a solo run in Greece. He also explains why he became an author and a runner, narrating the key role that both the activities play in his life. Murakami asserts that if he hadn’t turned to long-distance running before becoming an author, his books would have been completely different. He also doesn’t hesitate to talk about the physical limitations he has experienced due to aging.

    Inspiring

Book is very good. I am not a avid reader but I found this book very interesting and inspiring. Inspiring in the sense that author has given example how running helps him concentrate and draw comparison between running and writing

    Disappointed with the edition...

Great service by flipkart, on time delivery etc.etc.
Couple of things I found disappointing - the reason I ordered the Rs 600 copy from Flipkart is for the Cover of the book, I wanted to gift this book to a friend and wanted her to have a better copy/cover than what is available in the market. But turns out i've got the same copy that my sister picked up from blossoms for half the price :( that hurt!

Anyhoo, the book is a good read.

    A read for runners

What drew me to this one was the title. Raymond Carver, a favourite American short story writer, has a collection called 'What I Talk About When I Talk About Love'. Turns out Murakami admires Carver too.

Perhaps in keeping with Carver, this book employs spartan prose. It is nonchalantly honest, yet effortlessly proud, about remarkable feats of physical endurance. Given how many of his books tug the magical realism line, it is refreshing to see such personal candour in writing about running.

A book all runners can relate to and non runners can enjoy!

Why do you run ? This is a question all serious runners are asked. Serious running go beyond casual fitness runs. Long distance running is always lonely and invariably painful. It does teach you discipline and courage.
Murakami has written an excellent memoir about the reasons he started to run and how it changed his life and his writing.
All serious runners will relate to this book. Others will enjoy a very good book. Recommended.

    Perfect product!

Murakami is not everyone. I read kafka on the shore and said this ti myself...
But given what Murakami lovers say, I gave it a chance. I loved the book.

So it is like a rant. Someone who loves running is talking about it. I can connect with it, I loved it. Not everyone will... Tread lightly, with an open mind.
