Talkative Man is the thirteenth novel written by R. K. Narayan. It was published in the year 1986. Similar to several other famous stories penned by Narayan, Talkative Man is also set in the fictional village called Malgudi.

Summary of the Book

The story revolves around a wealthy journalist. He is known as the Talkative Man or TM. He follows a dull routine. Until a new person from a place called Timbuctoo (another fictional destination created by Narayan) comes to his village. The new visitor in Malgudi claims that he has come for some official work, representing the UN. But soon, the real purpose behind his arrival is found out, and the protagonist has to solve the problem. The story is presented from the point of view of the protagonist. True to his tone and enchanting approach, Narayan presents complex details about places and people in this book.

About R. K. Narayan

R. K. Narayan was born in Madras in 1906, and was educated there and at the Maharaja’s College in Mysore. His first novel, Swami and Friends, and the next, The Bachelor of Arts, are both set in the fascinating imaginary territory of Malgudi. Narayan’s work, The Guide, won him the Sahitya Akademi Award, the country’s highest literary honour. Narayan has also authored other collections of short stories, including A Horse and Two Goats, Malgudi Days, and Under the Banyan Tree. He has penned travel books, essays, memoirs, and has re-told legends like The Ramayana and The Mahabharata. In the year 1980, he was honoured with the A. C. Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature. R. K. Narayan passed away in 2001.
