In it, Akhtar takes his readers on a journey through his childhood, carefully recounting the loss of his childlike innocence with time. Soon after, his readers are pulled into the many joys and successes, and sorrows and struggles that were effected on him during his adult years. The book has a direct and powerful influence on its readers, as many are left reminiscing about the unpredictability surrounding their own lives.
In this inspirational jewel of modern literature, Akhtar recounts his life starting from his early days in Lucknow and Aligarh. After undergoing a topsy turvy adolescence, he ends up starting his career as a ghost scriptwriter in the Bombay film industry. His passion for writing at the time is such that he turns down a source of steady income just to be able to earn his living through his writings. This risky decision, which could have taken Akhtar either way in life, eventually turned out to be a bold decision, what with all the success that Akhtar later enjoyed despite undergoing tough circumstances. This success hadn’t, however, come free of cost. It had taken a toll on him, and this concealment of a wealth of pain is sometimes visible in this surreal collection of poetry.
Each of his poems, although appearing simple in its message, carries deep and passionate musings on life. The reader who is willing to dig deep and unearth the depth of meaning will find Tarkash (Hindi) an incredible source of inspiration and power.
