The non-native varieties of English are gaining status of their own. However, the problems regarding the teaching of English in countries like India are to be addressed and sorted out. One of the problems is what variety of English is to be taught in Indian schools and colleges. The syllabi at the school and college levels in India expect Indian students to learn standard British pronunciation. This book is about a study of the teaching of English pronunciation in some representative Indian higher primary schools. The conclusions of the study are based on observation of teaching in a classroom, interviews of experts, interviews of students and questionnaires given to teachers of English. The findings of the study throw light on the problems in the teaching of English pronunciation in Indian high schools, and also the attitude of Indian teachers and students to the teaching of English pronunciation.
