This is not about the content of the book, because there's no doubt in the excellency of the craft (it's a classic in the Indian writing in English). The only reason I have not given 5 stars is because there are spelling mistakes in the book, also the grammatical errors.

One of the best work of shashi deshpande...people who like novels with typical indian life types story background will like it...worth reading once.

When it comes to being a woman, sacrifice of ambitions and personal self is a prerequisite of the patriarchal tradition. Jaya becomes the 'perfect wife' but we are not perfect beings and so she loses sight of the girl she once was and becomes merely a 'wife'.
