  • Description
When British and American intelligence catch wind of a major Al Qaeda operation in the works, they are primed for action - but what can they do? They know nothing about the attack: the what, where or when. They have no sources in Al Qaeda, and it's impossible to plant someone. Impossible, unless ...The Afghan is Izmat Khan, a five-year prisoner of Guantanamo Bay and a former senior commander of the Taliban. The Afghan is also Colonel Mike Martin, a 25-year veteran of war zones around the world, a dark, lean man born and raised in Iraq. In an attempt to stave off disaster, the intelligence agencies will try to do what no one has ever done before - pass off a Westerner as an Arab among Arabs - pass off Martin as the trusted Khan. It will require extraordinary preparation, and then extraordinary luck, for nothing can truly prepare Martin for the dark and shifting world he is about to enter. Or for the terrible things he will find there ..."The Day of the Jackal", "The Dogs of War", "The Odessa File" - the books of Frederick Forsyth have helped define the international thriller as we know it today.Combining meticulous research with crisp narratives and plots as current as the headlines, Forsyth shows us the world as it is, in a way that few have ever been able to equal. And the world as it is today is a very scary place ...

A PEEP INSIDE THE WORLD OF COVERT OPERATIONS

This is one of the best books of Forsyth and is a thrilling read. If like his book 'The Fist of God' you are bound to love this one.

Even though this is fiction Forsyth must have spent a lot of time on research because along with the story he provides us with real life facts about clandestine operations and espionage. This is a must have for every Forsyth fan.

    Nothing exceptional..

The book was good when compared to his latest novel The Cobra, where Forsyth sometimes missed the ploy. The book is a good time pass and the story is also good keeping the reader instrested.. Its not a book unlike his earlier stories which is really thrilling, but overall the book has good plot and will keep you interested.

    Good but not great

    1) Planting an agent in Al-Qaida was a greatly intriguing concept an really fuels your urge to read on.
    2) The author gives a brief biography of the main characters from page 91 to 179 which can get a bit boring and you might as well skip them.
    3) Does not have much of a CLIMAX and the plot is not very strong nor there is much happening in it.
    4) But overall it may be worth reading.

    Detailed, intriguing

The Afghan by Richard Forsyth speaks volumes of about the Taliban and the Al-Quaeda. The covert operation of the U.S. and the British intelligence agencies to thwart a terrorist attack aimed at crippling the global economy will keep the reader engrossed. The book contains vivid descriptions of all the players in the act which is very engrossing and helps the reader feel attached to the story. The story will take the reader through a myriad of destinations, so, fasten your seat belts and get r...

    Damp Squib

Dont waste your time guys...the plot is good but the execution trails off into oblivion. the author loses track of the characters midway...too many to handle and simply drowns in the end. If you are a first time reader, you may feel excited but simply doesnt work for me! 350 down the drain!!
