  • Description

A young boy summons a djinni to do his bidding, only to discover that the creature isn’t quite as obedient as it should be. The Amulet of Samarkand is the first book in Jonathan Stroud’s Bartimaeus Trilogy of fantasy novels.

    Summary of the Book

Nathaniel is a young magician-in-training, serving his master. In this world, Britain is governed by powerful magicians, and young children with a gift for magic are sold to the government as a “sacrifice” for a “noble destiny”. Nathaniel’s master, Arthur Underwood, is a cruel man. He works at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and he is a hard taskmaster. One day, he is humiliated by the master magician Simon Lovelace, and Underwood does nothing to help him. Angry at his shame, Nathaniel resorts to vengeance on his own, studying ancient texts to acquire knowledge. He discovers the name of a 5000 year old djinni, the great and powerful Bartimaeus of Uruk, the servant of Solomon and Ptolemy. However, he has made a tiny mistake. He has told Bartimaeus his real name, and that gives the djinni power over him.

The book is great with the unique narrative style that can be seen in all the books in this series....
The story is set in a world same as ours ....except that the humans are divided into magicians and commoners( yeah like harry potter :) )....except that here the magicians do not have ...

Something fresh in the fantasy genre

Fantasy titles are tricky to write ... Its really hard to write something original and non-cheesy ... But this book really delivers :)

It's fun and fast - with lots of witticisms thrown in ... its a good read for any fans of this genre ...

    Bartimaeus

I wouldn't compare this book with harry potter and eragon (though eragon ending is very bad). The primary flaw in this book is that hero doesn't have the qualities of......what should i say??????...the qualities of a "HERO"..meaning his inert nature is not so good...i wouldn't go on to say that this is a great book, but if u want to pass time it is definitely worth the time.
P.S i haven't read the other two. Hope he may bring some change in nathaniel's character

The story line is pretty straight forward without much to twists and turns !! but seriously its pretty ordinary .... May take some patience to finish it ( so better not stop it any where :P ) ... Bottomline - Not the best buys if u r looking forward something amazing or out of the blue ..

oh you pompous , arrogant, know-it-all Djinni!!

If you are a fantasy lover, this is the book for you. The author has done a great job here by portraying the world of the supernaturals, magicians and the "commoners" in the most captivating, comical and exciting manner. It is unputdownable and by the end of it all you'd be running to purchase the next in the series.

Flipkart brings home the book within a decent delivery time, in good condition and at a well discounted price.
My make, the cover pages are a bit clumsy. I'm tempted to blame t...

    Awesome Story Bad Book Quality

The Bartimaeus Trilogy (The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye, Ptolemy's Gate) along with its prequel(The Ring of Solomon) is my favourite book. The way Jonathan Stroud writes the story as well the tiny footnotes by Bartimaeus just add to the allure of this book. I've read this book before and would read it again and again just for the pleasure of it. However the quality of the book i got from flipkart leaves one highly dejected. The book came in a nice fine plastic wrap and had no damage ...

    This where it all started

From the very first page of Bartimaeus appearance, he being locked in silver bowl of stinking soup and to his departure, this book's narration captivates you right from the beginning. I promise you this will make you wish for a world like this be real in your lifetime at least!!!
