This 2011 family drama, The Beaver is the third directorial venture of Jodie Foster, who is one of Hollywood’s most highly acclaimed female stars. Playing the female lead, Jodie Foster shares the screen with one of Hollywood’s most celebrated and arguably amongst the most talented artists to ever grace the big screen, Mel Gibson. This movie also marks this leading couple’s return to the big screen after their 1994 smash hit, Maverick.
Mel Gibson, whose acting credits include the likes of the famed Lethal Weapon series, Braveheart, Mad Max, Signs, Maverick, What Women Want and many more, takes over the character of Walter Black, a depressed CEO of a children’s toy company that is on the verge of bankruptcy. Playing Walter’s exasperated wife is Jodie Foster, who reaches a saturation point in trying to manage her wayward husband and finally kicks him out of the house, which forces Mel Gibson’s character to move into a hotel.
After surviving several suicide attempts and many emotional setbacks, Walter discovers his alter ego in a beaver hand puppet that he finds in the trash. From that moment on, Walter is never seen without his beaver puppet, through which he finds it easy to communicate with people and eventually helps him recover from his unfortunate predicament. The plot thickens when Walter’s wife discovers the truth about the beaver as opposed to Walter’s version, where he claims that the beaver was part of his treatment recommended by his psychiatrist.
With a brilliant soundtrack composed by Marcelo Zarvos, the movie takes you through a beautifully compiled cocktail of emotions that deals with anger, pain, love, hate, sorrow and joy which effortlessly ties the film together. Follow the lives of the two lead characters with supporting performances by a few well-known and upcoming stars which include Anton Yelchin, Reily Thomas Stewart and the lovely Jennifer Lawrence from The Hunger Games fame.
So join the cast as they take you through Walter’s troubled journey through life and witness all the good and the bad as he tries ever so hard to reconnect with his family, revive his collapsed career and turn his life around.
