Description
Set in 1945, The English Patient explores the lives of four very disparate war torn people, a young woman and three men, who take refuge in a damaged villa north of Florence as the war retreats around them. In an upstairs room lies the badly burned English patient, alive but unable to move. His extraordinary adventures and turbulent love affair in the North African desert before the war provide the focus around which the vivid tales of his companions revolve. His very presence will forever change the destiny of those around him.

Magnificent!

I love how Ondaatje ends each chapter with an event but with a recollection or a memory. Passionate like the ocean on a particularly stormy night, intricate like an immaculately woven mughal motif, this is one book I couldnt put down. I have read it thrice and I have been held spell bound by Ondaatje’s tale of love and wistful longing, revealed through the memories of a completely burnt, nameless, faceless man who is called the English patient, because he only knows English.

Set in post-war...

Excellence in narration

The author is quite high on sensitive quotient and it reflects in his empathy to multiple characters. Got hold of this book after seeing the movie and this one doesn't disappoint either. There is a highly poetic quality in ideas and flow of the story, though it is non-linear. Valuable addition to any collection. Really 5 star...

A good read

If you've seen the eponymous movie you'll find this book much better. The conclusion is more intriguing here. The book is unputdownable once you start. It took me three days to finish the novel. Recommended for regular readers.

The English Patient. A tale of Romance and Tragedy ,

I saw the movie first which impressed me very much, then i wanted to read the original novel and i was happy to get it on FLIPKART.the way the story is written makes you wonder whether you are dreaming or awake. Its poetic and at the same time a narration. Very few novels are written like this. A must for your english literature library. worth every penny.
Thanks flipkart for finding the book for me.

Magnificent Read

There is absolutely no doubt about mastery of the writer. This book has a real story. A fancy amalgamation of Drama, story, poetry and philosophy. The reader might feel getting away in first 20 pages or so but once he catches up the rhythm of the writer, you can not put this down.

The best thing which i like personally is use of very limited number of characters in the book, because of which the reader can relate to them quite easily. the There is absolutely no doubt this book is a booker p...

A love story at the back drop of World War II

Emotion, Romance , Confusion, Love, Hate, Deceit, Nationalism, War, Death, Destruction, Country, Pride, Service, Red Cross...all weaved together into a thick layered plot.
Either watch the movie by same name or read this book.

Very good book.

Well my review here is biased, so stop reading it, might corrupt you.
I liked it because it portrays:
1. Pleasure of cheating
2. Pleasure of pain
3. Pleasure of being separated from your love.
4. the way it portray love, without certainties of future, fragile and vulnerable.
