WINNER OF THE JCB PRIZE FOR LITERATURE 2019 WINNER OF THE TATA LIT LIVE! FIRST BOOK AWARD 2019 WINNER OF THE CROSSWORD BOOK AWARD FOR FICTION 2019 SHORTLISTED FOR THE DSC PRIZE FOR SOUTH ASIAN LITERATURE 2019 In the wake of her mother's death, Shalini, a privileged, naive and restless young woman from Bangalore, sets out for a remote village in Kashmir. Certain that the loss of her mother is somehow connected to the decade-old disappearance of Bashir Ahmed, a charming Kashmiri salesman who frequented her childhood home, she is determined to track him down. But as soon as Shalini arrives, she is confronted with the region's politics, as well as the tangled history of the local family that takes her in. As life in the village turns volatile and old hatreds threaten to erupt into violence, Shalini finds herself forced to make a series of choices that could have dangerous repercussions for the people she has come to love. With rare acumen and evocative prose, in The Far Field Madhuri Vijay gives a potent critique of Indian politics and class prejudice through the lens of a guileless outsider, while also offering up a profound meditation on grief, guilt and the limits of compassion.

    Wonderful

Oh my, what a gem of a novel. Worth your time and worth every penny. Definitely give it a read. The story will leave you speechless and in some not so pleasant thoughts... Though it's a fiction novel, it has some layered social commentary.

Reasons why I decided to read this book
    1. Winner of 2019 JCB Prize

    3. Kashmir

🔸THE FAR FIELD BY MADHURI VIJAY was indeed a compelling read, and I was unable to put this book down until I finished reading it. After reading this novel, I was confused. Did I like this or not?

🔸This is Shalini's story. Her bond with her mother, her grief of losing her, her life in Bangalore, her relation with Basheer Ahmed, her friendships, her indecisiveness in life and her jour...

    Terrific purchase

If you are an avid reader, this MUST be a part of your collection. Shalini transports you to the magical Himalayan slopes of Kashmir from the streets of Bangalore. Very Good

This is a story about sensibility, knowledge, and ignorance among people who are set apart by long distances.

You will find very relatable characters, who are driven by opposing forces of belonging and escapism.

The author takes you right in the mind of many of these characters and helps you explore the complex drives behind their behaviours.

Of course, the plot covers a diverse range of locality: from urban to rural village.

Overall, it is a good story about people connected and disco...
