  • Description

Winston Churchill begins his epic saga of the Second World War with The Gathering Storm, the first book in which he details the reasons for the outbreak of World War 2.

    Summary of the Book

There are few books, perhaps, that fall under the title of great world events. They are heralded by their content, their message and their theme. Churchill’s series on the Second World War began as a necessary continuation of his earlier series on the First World War, The World Crisis. However, the nature of this series changed, for not only was Churchill a part of the Second World War, he headed the first half of the battles against the Third Reich. In this book, he brings together accounts of the events prior to the outbreak of the war, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and the foreshadowing that hinted at the events to come. The story he tells is one that has been told and retold, but what sets this book and the rest of the series apart is the former British Prime Minister’s sense of literary style and candour. Churchill brings together letters, detailed war strategies, plots and codes which were deciphered during the first few years of the war. He reveals how events played out, admits that much could have been prevented, and discusses the effects that failing to see the war beforehand had on the world. This book, and the rest of the series, form a part of world history that tells the story of a mistake that shook the world. It tells not only the story of one man who chose to encompass the entire civilized world with his hate and his anti-Semitic vendetta, but the story of a man who chose to fight, despite all odds, and bring together the world in spitting in the face of a tyrant.
