The Giving Tree is a children's book which portrays the theme of selfless love between a boy and an apple tree.

Summary of the Book

Illustrated and told by Shel Silverstein, this is the story of a female apple tree and a boy. Throughout his life, the apple tree provides for the boy, considering him a young child even in his childhood. The tree gives unconditionally to the boy who upon growing up realizes that he is not just content eating the fruit of the tree. The story teaches children about selflessness and unconditional love.

About Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein was an American writer, poet, singer, songwriter, cartoonist and screenwriter. He is best remembered for Where the Sidewalk Ends, The Missing Piece, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Don't Bump the Glump! and Other Fantasies and Runny Babbit. He also wrote several books under the pseudonym of Uncle Shelby.

He won a Grammy for A Boy Named Sue and was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his song "I'm Checkin' Out."
