  • Description
For nearly a century the two most powerful nations on earth, Victorian Britain and Tsarist Russia, fought a secret war in the lonely passes and deserts of Central Asia. Those engaged in this shadowy struggle called it 'The Great Game', a phrase immortalized by Kipling. When play first began the two rival empires lay nearly 2,000 miles apart. By the end, some Russian outposts were within 20 miles of India. This classic book tells the story of the Great Game through the exploits of the young officers, both British and Russian, who risked their lives playing it. Disguised as holy men or native horse-traders, they mapped secret passes, gathered intelligence and sought the allegiance of powerful khans. Some never returned. The violent repercussions of the Great Game are still convulsing Central Asia today.

    Just wow!

A war that was fought covertly and secretly over a vast and treacherous terrain encompassing the desolate plains and rough high altitudes of central asia, which also includes the diverse and simple people of these regions cut off from the world for generations. This was started by middle of nineteenth century and still continues but the stake holders change after the mid twenth century. It fascinating reading. Excellent and great history. Helps us to understand the modern great game and how i...

A very good account of the Great Game

The book "The Great Game" by Peter Hopkirk is unarguably one of the best works on the subject of espionage in general and the epic and thrilling duel between two of the greatest empires the world has ever seen, the British empire and the Russian empire in particular. The book sufficiently covers in its scope, that what is necessary to know and understand about the history of the Great Game and the area where it all took place.

While reading the book I was marvelled at not only the intrigues ...

one of my all time favorites

A perfect book for history, thriller, spy stories lovers..
The great game between Brithish empire and Russian Tzars..
When it started their borders were 2000 miles apart and when it ended in early 1907(i guess), their borders were just 20 miles apart as russian won all the territory in-between

    Simply brilliant

The intertwined history of Central Asia and the British India has never been put in words so lucidly by any one. Events seem to unfold so realistically giving a sense as if it all happened yesterday. Hopkirk is absolutely on the mark when he relates modern happenings with what happened in nineteenth century. A masterful description of intrigue, 'The Great Game' occupies top slot whenever events of central Asia are studied.
