    Description
Naresh Kumar, PA to Shri R.K. Asthana, IAS, is his boss' doorkeeper. There is a share for Naresh in the bounties that flow in through that door, and there has been for years. But he is a man besieged. His married daughter is having trouble conceiving, his son's call centre job might be a cover for something murkier, and his wife expects him to solve these problems. Then there is Pinki Kaur, a colleague and his friend's widow, whose presence in the office stirs responses in him that he can neither submit to nor suppress. Distracted by personal crises, he misses the signs of political trouble brewing at work, and so it is that Naresh finds himself suspended from his job. Unseated from the desk that has been the source of his power and well-being, he must still struggle to make things right for his family: Naresh is, after all, a householder. With uncommon acuity, Amitabha Bagchi writes of a world where favours are currency, where access to power sometimes feels like a prerequisite for survival, where power can be both total and ephemeral. The Householder is a view from within this world, an examination of the moral condition of our times.

    • Amitabha Bagchi was born in Delhi and went to school there. The last few years of school was a blur of exams - Junior Science Talent Search, National Talent Search, Annual Maths and Physics Olympiads - and coaching classes to prepare for those exams. He finally found himself at IIT Delhi in the summer of 1992 thinking that the worst was over. It wasn't. Belying the expectations raised by his uninspriring performance at IIT, Amitabha got his PhD in Computer Science in 2002. Then, after loitering around for a couple of years with the nebulous designation of post-doc, he returned to IIT Delhi where he is currently employed as an assistant professor.

    Desi but Classy

I enjoyed the book. It's as enjoyable as (if not more enjoyable than) his first book, "Above Average". The characters are very real, very Indian, people we can all relate to. The style of writing is very refreshing - classy with a desi flavour. It gives a good view of how bureaucracy works, and the life of a middle class government employee. A good read.

A middle class family's life, well scripted

Crisis and redemptions in normal life of a family...one after another. You can find some resemblance in your life if your father/mother is govt servant or a family person working in night shifts or faced some marital discord...A balancing act between moral values, family and things you really want to do in life...beyond household but still clutching to it forever. Worth a read.
