The Hungry Tide - Easily the best novel I've read this year!

Often you come across a novel with a great story. Not very often you come across a novel with a great story and is reasonably well written. But it is rare to come across a novel that has a fantastic story and is so amazingly well written that you become an instant undying fan of the author. “The hungry tide” by Amitav Ghosh is one such.

Set in the 70’s, the story revolves around the Sundarbans and the animals and people that depend upon it. The story itself is about an Indian origin American...

    Excellent work of fiction

It is not very often that you come across a great fiction in English written by Indian Author. The Hungry Tide is one such book which shoulders along with one of the finest book written in fiction.

The Author was able to woo the readers with the use of two different tools of story writing :

    1) The pace at which story unfolds is remarkable with enough twists and turns to keep you engaged.

    2) The description of Tidal Islands of Bengal is strikingly brilliant. There is a beauty in its exist...

Amazing book...a must read for everyone

It is one of the fascinating books that I have ever come across.Amitav Ghosh's style of storytelling was brilliant and the characters that he introduced was so lively that would make you feel that you had already known them. And also the description of the Sunderban islands, the mangrove forests, the tidal creeks would tempt every book-lover to pack their bags and go for a trip to the tidal country.

    An outstanding novel

Let me be precise for I don’t want to repeat what other reviewers have already said.
What will you find in this book?
    1. Rich description of the elegant natural beauty of Sundarban and its Mangrove Forest
    2. Mythology associated with this area
    3. Political agitation caused by the government in the attempt of eviction of the refugees.
    4. Untold love story of an young scientist with an illiterate boatman in the ‘’silence of heart’’

    Final Verdict: A must read

    Very intriguing

The story and the narrator both will keep you glued to the book.
The story to me was of a very different sort and so was the writers style. The quality of language is very good. You don't have to constantly sit with a dictionary besides you ;). The writer has the ability to help you visualize the entire scene.
In short a very good book and extraordinary writing. I loved reading it :)

    Poetic & lovely...

The love & intimacy in this book is so well crafted metaphorically that it just blends you in. Its all like poetry; beautiful and lively. Books such as these can kindle your emotions to such an extent. And by love I don't mean the one between a man and a woman. Here there is so much more. The nature, forest and seas, mangroves and sands, crabs and dolphins, tide and river. Love and hate binding them all in storm and silence. Wonderful writing.

    The Activities of the Tide

The central figure of the book is unambiguously what the author calls "The Tide Country". The story revolves around some characters whose lives and death are shaped by the whimsical and capricious tides.
The story progresses simultaneously with bits of history and present day scenario. The events (of the past as well as of the present) are juxtaposed to show how history is being repeated.
The story's narrated in a lucidly coherent manner. The story, though, appeared to end quite abruptly. A...
