Why is there a shipping charge for this item?

Sellers with Flipkart Assured waive off the delivery charge for Orders over Rs 500. For Orders under Rs 500, a nominal delivery charge is added per item.

Sellers without Flipkart Assured may or may not add a delivery charge to your Order. This is subject to Seller discretion.

What is the estimated delivery time?

Sellers generally procure and ship the items within the time specified on the product page. Business days exclude public holidays and Sundays.

Estimated delivery time depends on the following factors:

      • The Seller offering the product
      • Product's availability with the Seller
      • The destination to which you want the order shipped to and the Seller's location

Why does the delivery date not correspond to the delivery timeline of X-Y business days?

It is possible that the Seller or our courier partners observe a holiday between the day you placed your order and the date of delivery, which is based on the timelines shown on the product page. In this case, we add a day to the estimated date. Some courier partners and Sellers do not work on Sundays and this is factored in to the delivery dates.

What do the different tags like 'In Stock', 'Available' mean?

      'In Stock'

Products‘In Stock’ are readily available with seller.

      'Available'

Products listed as ‘In Stock’ are readily available with seller.

      'Preorder' or 'Forthcoming'

Currently, the item is not available for sale. Use the 'Notify Me' feature to know once it is available for purchase.

      'Imported'

Sometimes, items have to be sourced by Sellers from outside India. These items are mentioned as 'Imported' on the product page and can take at least 10 days or more to be delivered to you.

      'Back In Stock Soon'

The item is popular and is sold out. You can however 'book' an order for the product and it will be shipped according to the timelines mentioned by the Seller.

      'Temporarily Unavailable'

The product is currently out of stock and is not available for purchase. The product could to be in stock soon. Use the 'Notify Me' feature to know when it is available for purchase.

      'Permanently Discontinued'

This product is no longer available because it is obsolete and/or its production has been discontinued.

      'Out of Print'

This product is not available because it is no longer published and has been permanently discontinued.

Why does the estimated delivery time vary for each seller?

Delivery times are influenced by product availability, geographic location of the Seller, your shipping destination and the courier partner's time-to-deliver to your location.

Please enter your default pin code on the product page to know more accurate delivery times on the product page itself.

Seller does not/cannot ship to my area. Why?

Enter your pincode on the product page to know whether the product can be delivered to your location.

If you haven't provided your pincode until the checkout stage, the pincode in your last used shipping address will be used to check for serviceability.

Whether your location can be serviced or not depends on:

      • Whether the Seller actually ships to your location
      • Legal restrictions, if any, in shipping particular products to your location
      • The availability of reliable courier partners in your location

At times Sellers prefer not to ship to certain locations. This is entirely at their discretion.

    Description

Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance Of Loss is an award-winning novel which deals with the Indian immigrant’s status in the United States. This is a fictional account that deals with Biju and Sai and their transition from colonialism to post colonialism.

    Summary Of The Book

The Inheritance Of Loss is a novel by Kiran Desai that narrates the journey of an illegal immigrant Biju and the anglicized Sai living in the U.S.
The novel introduces the protagonist, Biju, as an illegal immigrant. Biju works as a cook in Sai’s grandfather’s household. This work juxtaposes two narratives, one dealing with Biju’s life in the U.S and the other with Sai in Kalimpong, being raised by her maternal grandfather.

Set in 1986, the narrator begins the tale with Biju who has been trying to make a living in the U.S. Desai tries to trace the conflicts that are associated with immigrant groups, especially Indians. There is also a constant reiteration of the past within the present frame of narrative in the novel.

The protagonists are caught in an interesting paradigm; he rejects and resists the American culture, yet he also realizes the need to fit in in order to make a living. The prospect of going back to India and living in abject poverty is a fearful one for Biju.

The author, through this fictitious narrative, touches upon the real life anxieties of Indians living abroad that face an identity crisis. Sai’s grandfather, Jemubhai Patel, faces such a dilemma despite his successful legal career. He is frustrated with those that cling on to the traditional Indian customs. He adopts the English way of life completely.

Desai also deals with the post colonial hangover which creates a sense of loss amongst one’s own race as well as in the American community.
Snobbery, anger, mistrust, and a loss of traditions are some of the themes that Desai tackles in The Inheritance Of Loss. The Indians and the American Indians both struggle for a sense of self in the social space.

The author also incorporates the historic Gorkhaland Movement in the story.

    About The Author

Kiran Desai is best known for her novel, The Inheritance Of Loss. Most of her works deal with social issues in post-colonial India such as the inability to transition from the past to the present and migration.

Her first published novel was called Hullabaloo In The Guava Orchard for which she was critically praised. She won the Betty Trask Award for this book. The Inheritance Of Loss was critically acclaimed and won her the 2006 National Book Critics Circle award for fiction.

She was born on the 3rd of September, 1971. Daughter of the noted author Anita Desai, she has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize several times. She was born in India but was raised and educated in England and the U.S.

Perfection in the form of a book.

I read Kiran Desai's The Inheritance of Loss in 2007 when I was in 7th grade. Though I couldn't completely understand all the nuances of the prose back then, I read it in one sitting. When I read it later, I couldn't hold back tears of joy. This book was fresh, unusual, exhilarating, brilliantly insightful, funny, sarcastic, happy, depressing..everything. It had every human emotion wrapped up in words and what a balance it maintained! Kiran Desai has been my top author ever since. This book w...

    Read to get sleepy

It is no doubt a good book. But yes, it isn't really a page turner. In fact at times, it drags on and on and you just want it to end, this happens in the middle phrase. The idea behind the book is good but the portrayal can at times give you a headache. This isn't one of the books that make you go "Ahh..wow..I really read a good book!" once you finish reading it, and neither does it make you wish it never ended. You're gonna be glad it ended.

A total "BINDING STORY" is missing...

Kiran Desai has described the characters in the novel very vividly. She has described the characters' past and present life with enormous details which paints a complete picture of the characters in the reader's mind.
But what she has failed to do is combine the individual painted pictures into a total and complete Picture of a story...
What i mean is that in the whole novel a totally "bound" story is missing...
She also fails to hold the readers to the flow of the novel...
    Overall the whole...

    Nothing to say...

I am just speechless after reading this book. And the reception of Man-Booker Award speaks for itself. Only I would like to quote the comment by India Today- "A delightful original book, a triumph of the storyteller's art, nuanced, and even worthy of the most overworked term: luminous."

    Again flipkart rocked---

    Tough, Involving, Bare Truth

The book starts really well take you through the beauty of North East keeps you involved and then comes the reality of tough life, which becomes so depressing but is also the truth of life. The story revolves around few characters, makes you feel really sorry about most of them and most importantly state of the country and how politics and few selfish minded people can create chaos even for the peace loving folks.

    not for the easy readers

I had high expectations when i ordered this book, but it left me disappointed. one of the very few books that i had to force myself to finish. no doubt, the language is amazing with all the inspiring metaphors, but didnt find the story line too impressive. seemed more like a non-commercial bollywood flick.
