Intense, compelling, complicated, and breathtaking, Khaled Hosseini’s first novel, The Kite Runner, is set against a series of tumultuous historical events. This is a deep story of love and friendship that is sure to touch the readers’ heart.
Summary Of The Book
Hosseini’s novel revolves around a young Afghan boy from Kabul, Amir, and his friend Hassan, who is Amir’s father's servant’s son. Amir’s father, another pivotal character of the novel, referred to as Baba, is often critical of him. He tries his level best to win the trust and love of his father while performing acts of cowardice and betrayal to some of his closest consorts.
The story then gradually moves onto when Amir and his father escape to Peshawar and the tumultuous events that occur in between. He then pursues his love for writing and marries a woman called Soraya.
The story then follows a journey of truth and revelations where Amir embarks on a journey to find a young orphan and undo his misdeeds. Accompanied by various supporting characters, the story never fails to surprise and amaze the reader.
Touching upon themes of love, friendship, betrayal, cruelty, redemption and re-union, The Kite Runner also follows the fall of Afghanistan’s monarchy, the exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the rise of the Taliban regime.
Some critics also see the novel as a projection of personal events that Hosseini went through himself. He is believed to have loved the idea of kite flying, which was banned in Afghanistan later. This motivated him to weave a short story around the plot which he eventually formulated in the form of a book.
Khaled Hosseini’s first ever attempt at writing a novel in the form of The Kite Runner, became an absolute success and eventually a bestseller. Following the success of the book, a feature film was also made under the same name in the year 2007.
