The Last Poem is a novel written by Rabindranath Tagore, originally in Bengali, titled Shesher Kabita. It was translated to English by Dilip Basu. The paintings are done by Dinkar Kowshik.
Summary of the Book
This extremely enchanting romantic novel unfolds in the backdrop of a beautiful hill station of Shillong in north-eastern India. Considered as one of Tagore’s masterpieces, this title was serialised in the magazine called Probashi in the year 1928. The protagonist, Amit Ray, is a barrister educated at Oxford. He travels in order to escape the drudgery of his middle-class existence, and gets keenly involved in poetry and passion with the enigmatic and elegant Lavanya. Both of them discover their strengths, their flaws, their ambitions, and their follies in this unconditional love story, as they grow more and more intimate with each other.
About Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore was an Indian poet, writer, and philosopher. His writings are considered the epitome of Bengali literature and several of his short stories and novels have been translated into many languages and have subsequently been adapted into hit movies. He is best remembered for: Gora, Kabuliwala, The Home and the World, and Chokher Bali. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, largely for the English translation of the Gitanjali. He was also conferred a knighthood by the British Empire which he renounced to protest against the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.
