    Description

The story about The Legend Of Amrapali is of destruction and great suffering caused by the stubborn desires of a single man who was drunk with power and arrogance.

    Summary Of The Book

Around 500 B.C., Aryavart was a land comprising a number of prosperous kingdoms. Among them, the most outstanding one was the Vajji Confederacy, which was among the first democratic republic known by mankind. Vaishali was the capital of the confederacy and the renowned Lichchavis clan. It was a center of political and commerce activity and also Amrapali’s blessed motherland.

The Legend of Amrapali is about Amrapali who was a clever, famous courtesan. She was pretty, talented and had all the qualities that courtesans living in the city of Vaishali were meant to have. Vajji confederacy was ruled by king Manudeva. Manudeva becomes infatuated by Amrapali when he catches a glimpse of her while attending Gautama Buddha’s discourse. From childhood, Amrapali has been in love with Pushpakumar, whom she wanted to marry. The king’s proposal for making Amrapali his queen is rejected by her father. Hence, the king traps Pushpakumar in a false spying case and simultaneously arranges for declaring Amrapali as “Nagarvadhu”, a position that requires her to entertain the king along with the other nobles of the king’s court. While escaping from prison, Pushpakumar is killed, which forces Amrapali to become the state courtesan. The story then weaves around Amrapali’s attempts to take revenge against Manudeva for murdering Pushpakumar, and the difficult situations she finds herself in.

Different from the usual breed of authors - a fresh breeze

It was the subject of the book that made me order it and i wasn't quite sure as to what to expect from it since i hadn't read any of Anurag's earlier works. The book however came as a pleasant surprise and by the end of the first chapter i knew that i was going to spend a better part of my Friday night in finishing it - which i eventually did.

The story is fast paced, beautifully written and contains all the elements that one can expect from a good book - drama, twists, love, sex, glamour, p...

    More than an engaging read!

I had black-listed the publisher, Srishti Books, because of one of their titles i had accidently picked up. I think it was called... Few Things Left Unsaid... or something like that! A horrible book with terrible language and a nonsensical story line that had turned me off bigtime and i had vowed never to experiment with the so called 'bestsellers' from this particular publisher. However it was the subject of the book, The Legend of Amrapali that made me take one more punt and i was glad that...

    A Good Book to Read.

A gripping tale with linkages into our history. Well worded to create the landscape in mind with the emotions and all being personified by each character. The climax is good and enthralling. All in all a good work by Anurag Anand.

One of the best books i have read in a long time..

Amrapali, we all know is an enigma and her grandoise life has been presented in various forms time and again. Only, most of the litreature available treats her like a larger than life entity, a girl who was 'meant' to be what she became. However, this was the first book where i could read and visualise the trauma of a normal young girl and her plight as she embarked on a path that eventually made her the 'Nagarvadhu' we know.

To me what was particularly astounding was that the author, a mal...

    Worth to admire

The Legend of Amrapali is a book that will take you to the high of well designed literature. It has all the grip you want in a book. You will enjoy it and surprised by it's so mature language.
It's not like that well formed novel where you will find every drama and action have a directed path. This book has a real charecter with real need and real struggle of that time period of era.
About the story, it's not the whole truth of amrapali in a certain way but it still manage the genre an...

Nice theme but could have been lot better

Great theme and nice story. It is emotional at places and touching overall. The author writes well all along but misses the pulse at places. He could have elevated the emotions throughout and could have created a more gripping tale. There are a few instances where the book leaves it to the readers to explain a few unconnected dots (or it is just a mistake!).

    Interesting work of historical fiction

After reading books like Immortals of Meluha and Chanakyas Chant, i have found my interest in the historical fiction genre soaring. I was looking for a title that could match up to the ones that i had recently read and could match up to them when i stumbled across The Legend of Amrapali. And after reading the book i can happily state that it not only managed to live up to my expectations but also surpass them.

This is the first work of Anurag Anand that i have read and his poetic yet simple ...

    History Comes Alive with Anurag

Vijayanthimala Bali as Amrapali was truly enchanting in the movie ages ago. Her beauty was mesmerizing and the character enchanting. Nothing could beat that visual treat or so I had thought. But I was mistaken. Anurag Anand's Amrapali rises from the ravishing mound of the written word like a young woman in all her feminine glory and self-respecting valor. When I finally finished reading, The Legend Of Amrapali, I was left wanting for more.

From being that little infant found under the mango ...

    Good read

I am an avid reader of historical and mythological fiction and I keep looking for these books often. As I had not heard much of the author, I wasnâ??t sure if I wanted to pick the book. But my thirst for reading took over and I went ahead and ordered the book. Once I started reading, I couldnâ??t help but finish it in 2 reading session because the book was very interesting and well written. The character chosen, Amrapali, is great as I have not read too much about her. But towards the end, I...

    Engaging.. but too short...

An interesting book.. a story well told.. manages to retain ones interest throughout...
The one disappointment however was that the story was too fast paced.. and ended earlier than what one would have liked... Good for a weekend but not a book that would last you for your entire winter break!!
