Summary of the Book

When 14-year-old Susie Salmon walks home from school, she is lured to an underground den by George Harvey, who then rapes and murders her. Susie’s spirit escapes her body to her personal heaven and begins observing the people she has known in her life. George dismembers her body and hides her remains in a safe he then dumps into a sinkhole. Her family and friends have no idea that the young girl has been stripped from them forever in a heinous manner. Soon, they begin to piece together the facts and discover that Susie is dead. However, the investigation into the murder leads nowhere. Susie meets other victims of George Harvey in heaven, and begins to watch as the people she has loved struggle to move on in her absence.

An MFA holder from the University of California, Irvine, Alice won the American Booksellers Association Book of the Year Award for Adult Fiction and the Bram Stoker Award for First Novel.

This book was adapted into a film by Peter Jackson, starring Rachel Weisz, Stanley Tucci, Mark Wahlberg and Saoirse Ronan. Tucci was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
