  • Description

Adrian Levy and Cathy Scott-Clark’s The Meadow is the story of the 1995 Kashmir kidnapping that changed the face of modern terrorism by gaining world’s attention.

    Summary of the Book

Six tourists were abducted from the mountains of Kashmir in the year 1995. The ransom note left by the terrorists demanded the release of the notorious Pakistani militant leader, Maulana Masood Azhar, who was later responsible for the infamous attack on the Indian parliament. The entire world was in utter shock by this heinous event and international governments anxiously negotiated with Indian police, army and intelligence services to follow the trail. What followed next was a scarring incident. One of the prisoners escaped within four days, but was found after a month on or so, and was beheaded by his captors. They even carved their names into his flesh! The families of those who went missing, camped out in Delhi, had a hard time keeping their hopes alive after this. The tragedy is now long forgotten, and the remaining hostages were never found. This book tries to find an answer based on the facts and figures available on the incident.

"The Meadow" - Investigative Journalism at its best

This is a book that should be read by all those who value personal liberty above everything else.In the summer of 1995, six foreign tourists were abducted by a Pakistani-affiliated terrorist outfit known as Al Faran, from the Meadow in Kashmir, close to the picturesque Lidder valley of Pahalgam. While one of the hostages escaped from captivity almost immediately, a young Norwegian, Hans Christian Ostro was brutally murdered by his captors. The remaining four were last seen almost five months...

A Nerve Gripping narration of a Very Miserable story.

Seems like Authors has put all their journalistic experience in making this book. Story started as a scattered light and as it goes on ,all characters has culminated to one point. Had the feeling of watching a high adventurous, high intensity movie with unexpected turn of events and absolutely good screenplay.
But, felt really bad as the (normally movies end on a good note) emotions of the family members who lost their loved ones were inconsolable.
And top of all, those people were guests to...

    excellent investigative journalism

The title track is a little melodramatic- "the kashmir kidnapping that changed the face of modern terrorism". While I didn't find any clues to this effect anywhere in the book, yet apart from this sensational statement nothing in the book steps the limit or pushes the envelope.

The prose is succinct, poignant at times, especially when the authors describe in vivd detail the personalities of those innocent, long forgotten hostages and the people close to them; people whose lives they touched....

    a book of suprises

Thought it was all hype. But glad to say it was absolutely not. This is both gripping and shocking in equal measures. I raced through it and it is reverberating, still, around my head. Do not be pout off by the politicing taking place around this book. If you want a good read, and if you want to be informed, and if you want to know more about where we live and breathe read this book. A hymn to our lost humanity!

    Poignant and heart rending

Gripping narrative of a sordid tale of barbarism, deceit and debauchery. While on the one hand the book beautifully describes the heavenly locales of Kashmir, it never for once loses track of the inhuman circumstances faced by the kidnap victims and the resulting anguish to their family members. It is also a saga of the many unsung heroes of the valley who in their own little way tried to help the victims, the awe-inspiring characters of John Childs and Hans Christian Ostro who refused to acc...
