Description
During 1998-2003 government-aided Nepali schools were hardly anywhere in Dooars where more than 10 lakh Nepalese are inhibited. The then Left-front government was not agreed to set up the Nepali medium schools in Nepali populated areas for study in their mother tongue. These Nepali students had to go to Darjeeling and Siliguri for further study after passing Madhyamik examination. A group of educated Nepali youth came out with a social movement in Dooars demanding the right to study in their mother tongue. In an attempt to suppress their demand the then Left-Front government jailed so many youths. Kamtapuri movement was also on the rise during the period. The Left-front government arrested so many Rajbanshi youths and jailed them for more than a decade till it was overthrown from the power. This decade had seen so many political upheavals in Dooars and Terai area. How these youths wanted to uplift their society, and how they come across the situation of harsh treatment rendered by the government – the essence of which the author has tried to capture and pen down in this story.
