Summary Of The Book

The Notebook begins several years before the Second World War. Noah Calhoun is a young man working in a lumber yard. One day, he meets Allie Nelson, a beautiful young woman, and at once falls in love with her.

Noah manages to convince Allie to go on a date with him. The two are irresistibly attracted towards each other, but there is little hope of their love ever having a happy ending. Allie is from a very wealthy and class conscious family, who would never accept Noah.

Still they spend an idyllic summer in Noah’s town, as Allie’s family is there for the season. Noah shows her an old plantation house that he intends to buy and restore when he has enough money.

Allie and Noah find delight and love in each other’s company, but soon, their romance is broken up as expected. The Nelson family prohibits them from ever seeing each other again. Allie goes back to her own home with her family.

Noah holds on to the dream however, in the intervening years. He writes regularly to Allie, but receives no reply. What neither he nor Allie know is that Allie’s mother has intercepted all the letters and has never shown them to Allie.

Years pass, and their lives change. Noah enlists in the Army when World War II breaks out. After the war, he returns to his hometown, and manages to buy the plantation house and starts the work of restoration.

Allie, meanwhile, has become engaged to a successful lawyer and is quite happy. But fate makes Noah cross her path again, and the old attraction is soon rekindled. Now, each of them have to make a decision about what course of action they are going to take.

In the present time, an old man in a hospital is reading from an old notebook to a fellow patient, a woman suffering from alzheimers. The Notebook is a record of the love story between Noah and Allie.

Nicholas Sparks was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1965. He is a middle-child as he has an older brother and a younger sister who died when she was 33. Her life was the inspiration for his novel, A Walk To Remember. After trying several careers, Sparks finally found success as a writer. His first book was co-authored by Billy Miles, Wokini: A Lakota Journey To Happiness And Self-Understanding. The book was successful, but Sparks’ career was really launched after the publication of his first novel, The Notebook. It became a bestseller, and several of his books, including The Notebook have been adapted into movies.
