  • Description
The Outcaste, a first-person narrative, is an emotionally violent autobiography of a half-caste growing up in the Mahar community, and the anguish he suffers from not belonging to it fully. A numbing account of the humiliation of a community at the hands of an unthinking privileged class, it is a reflection on the darker side of Indian society. The work brings to light [through bitter critique] the lack of compassion that the lower castes have endured for centuries in our caste-ridden society. First published in 1984, the Marathi original went through four editions, and was acknowledged as a true milestone that publicized the Dalit cause.

A riveting story of lost childhood

I ordered this book on a whim, just to understand the landscape of dalit literature in india. After finishing the book i have only one word to describe it - poignant!! This is a tale of lost childhood and human prejudices.

    The Outcaste; A painful story

These days I have developed a deep interest in Dalit Literature. There is no specific reasons behind it, but I dunno why something pokes me from inside to share the pain of the Dalit classes, who for centuries have suffered social prejudices and untold hardships. The childhood narrative is presented in an absolutely lucid style and the simplicity of language is heart moving, brow raising, as we go on turning pages. As it is a translated work, I would also like to thank the Translator of this ...
