    Description
The village of Rudraksha Palem awakens and tells her tale. Five friends return to the village of their childhood to find that nothing seems to have changed and at the same time everything has. Whose voice is it that called them back and whose hand is it that now hunts them down, one by one? Palems grand old man, a Brahmin landlord, their childhood storyteller, makes one last ditch attempt to save his village from ruin at her hands. Will he succeed or will his past catch up with him and demand fair price? Two boys, one blind and the other lame, skirt the village borders at the old Shivalayam, listening, staring. On their faces they wear smiles of contentment. They sleep well. They see happy dreams. A TV reporter arrives to study the village, only to sink deeper into the mystery with each passing day. And hovering above all of these is the shadow of Lachi, who is believed to haunt the old Shivalayam on full moon nights. Some say shes consumed by lust, others call it madness, but all catch the red glint in her eye and the icy calm in her voice as she croons a sad, lonely song. The one thing she hungers for, that will satisfy her soul, is the fire that will burn Palem down to ashes. The village of Rudraksha Palem awakens and tells her tale. Listen closely. It will chill you to the bone.

Not a horror novel per se...

This is not a horror novel. However, the storyline is quiet gripping and engaging. The conclusion at the end does not seem to evoke the same grip that was during the beginning and in the middle.

One of the best in Indian horror thrillers

This is a spooky story around the village of Rudrakshapalem. where dreams are controlling the lives of its people.
There is a history behind it all, that chills the bones. Once, a well educated lady had smashed her husband's head and now they say she haunts the village.
5 children were told the story purposely when they were young. But as they grow up, they move out of the village to different cities to pursue their life goals. However, years later, one letter brings them all back to the vill...

Book Review – The Puppeteers of Palem by Sharat Komarraju
To be honest, I started on this book with trepidation, for frankly, the horror thriller genre is not my preferred bedtime reading. Quite frankly, I was anticipating Ramsey brothers with a Telegu accent, and was preparing for some unintended humour.
However, Sharat Komarraju has taken this book beyond the narrow confines of this genre. This is a tale of patriarchy, caste oppression, economic depression and the resultant violence hidden ...

    A story for moonless nights

The story moves back and forth over timelines across chapters adding to the feeling of uneasiness and disorientation that the author wants to weave around us. This is a ghost story set in a small village in South India and is as good and as chilling as any you heard when you were kids. The five friends who come back to the village grew up listening to stories at the knee of the Brahmin Avadhani, who was also the overlord of the village and a very respected elder. He had been telling stories t...

Thrills and Chills in Indian settings

Enjoy the thrills and chills of resident evil in Indian rural settings. Well conceived and nicely written. Set in rural Andhrapradesh, detailes of locales, people culture, language nicely woven into story. Creates dark mood which works effectively for the horror genre. The to and fro movement of the story across timelines makes the reading like solving a jigsaw puzzle. Definitely woth at least one read.

Excellent read and read it in the night!

To start off, really loved the fact the author has managed to weave a highly intricate story with several characters, multiple storylines and very non-linear. It is not really a joke to tie them all together and Sharath has managed to pull off a brilliantly themed book, true to its genre. The characters are deep, the location very unsettling and the writing, stellar. I loved the fact that there was nothing sacrificed for a superior story with a chilling end (I was actually spooked towards the...

Sharath spins a captivating web of a story

In his latest book “The Puppeteers of Palem”, Sharath Komarraju weaves an intricate and thoroughly captivating web of a tale.

With a non-linear story line, the novel starts off by introducing various interleaving stories from different timelines. As the story goes on and the links between various characters emerge, a clearer picture emerges and the reader can find himself/herself drawn further into the dark village of Palem. Sharath unravels the plot with such skill that it is not till the ...
