Description

The Reluctant Detective is about a typical Mumbai suburban housewife bored with the routine life, looking for a purpose in life beyond shopping and kitty lunches. Through the book, the author sends a message to her readers that one must not get involved in matters beyond his/her limits.

Summary Of The Book

Kay, or Kanan Mehra, is a suburban housewife of about 30 years of age. She is a young mother, who is very curious about things that she should be avoiding at any cost. When she finds a couple of quick successive murders taking place in her neighborhood, her curiosity gets the better of her and she makes a team with Runa, her nosy neighbour and detective friend, in an attempt to find the murderers. The story also has a hilarious overtone. The author also tries to convey a message through her book: one should involve in the matters of others, especially those that are not in his/her line of duty.

Through The Reluctant Detective, the author Kiran Manral attempts to capture the suburban lifestyle lead by a mother and a wife in Mumbai.

The book received mixed reviews from its readers.

A Lighthearted Murder Mystery

The Reluctant Detective is a very enjoyable read. I was reluctant to read this cause I knew this was not the usual murder mystery novel. However, it was very refreshing and unique. Kiran Manral's is a wonderful narrator. Her attention to detail is amazing and the characters are well described. Especially the characters of Kay Mehra and Runa the private eye! It is a humorous story. If you have a good imagination, you will feel its happening in your neighborhood. Bottom line is, It's a really ...

Picture Solid Business Kareygi

The book manages to pull off a Farhan Akhtar. Like Akhtar Jr. Manral comes with an impressive “ pedigree” , and could have taken the “easier” way out to get her dream book project off the ground But she does not, and like Akhtar goes out on the limb to create a project that is fresh in voice and one that has all the chances of becoming the Song of Our Generation.

Manral uses the cunning device of a murder/mystery plot to reel us in. The quick deaths (rather murders) are but a vehicle to ...

Worth reading - Value buying

Kiran has managed to pull out an excellent book. Considering the plot and narration I would rate this extremely well written. She has managed to describe her characters well and connect them as well. Let your imaginations flow and you get the feeling as part of the story. Characters are practical and plot feel like "it happens somewhere in neighborhood."
I recommend this book worth reading.

Enough humor to make you Giggle

It was a nice gripping and interesting story. The humor is enough to make you giggle. The book is as interesting as its cover. If you like quick, witty yet interestingly good stories, this ones for you. In all honesty, the book surprised me. And, would really like to read more from the author.

I laughed my guts out

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading The Reluctant Detective. The book is monumentally funny and even though the shoe on the cover may lead one to believe it is chic lit, Kiran's language is far too superior to qualify as mere chic lit. I loved her expression and in fact did not read the book quickly. I was delaying my gratification and prolonging my enjoyment by not hurriedly turning over the pages. Her style of writing is to be relished and to be reread. I strongly recommend this book to every...

A few laughs, heartening moments and totally relatable

Kiran Manral's The Reluctant Detective was a fun, quick read. Refreshing in its town, the novel captures the essence of the urban life of a mother and a wife -- a perspective not much talked about. Kay's maid woes, school meetings, lunches with the ladies are refreshing to read about. Manral's voice is laced with humor, self-depreciating towards her protagonist but it works in making Kay Mehra absolutely endearing to you. The mundane task of painting nails becomes a relatable, funny scene and...

Fun all the way!!

The Reluctant Detective is a breezy and fun read for lazy afternoon. It is filled with day to day happenings which most of us have been a part of and makes it more relatable. The best part of the book is that the humor is not forced upon you like songs in Hindi movies but blends seamlessly into the narrative. If you are looking for a light and humorous read, this is the book to pick up this weekend.

very boring

I would not recommend this book to anyone. Its fails to create interest. A waste of time and a waste of money. There is no story in this book. Just a woman blabbering and all.
Don't waste your money. It is not a murder mystery that will glue you to the book. But if you have nothing else to do, you can read it just to know how middle-aged women think (of course we all know that).

THE BORING DETECTIVE

This is neither a mystery novel nor a humourous read.. Both seem forced. After reading a few reviews here i bought it but they were really misleading. The idea however was really interesting that is why I bought it in the first place.

You can give it a pass for sure. wont recommend..

Not worth the time

It is an extremely boring and trite book, with poorly etched characters and a barely there plot. I found little reason to root for the central character, and couldn't care less about her or her neighbors' shenanigans.
