The Reverse Journey is a semi-autobiographical novel. The author mixes in his own experiences with the dreams, hopes and the heartaches of so many young people who follow the American dream. Yet, after a time, they feel a yearning for their own country and their own people. The protagonist of the novel belongs to this group. He gets a job after finishing his studies. Then, he decides to follow the example of his friends, and gets a job in the US. He spends five years working in that country.
After five years, he still has not applied for a Green Card, which is unusual for any young man who wants to settle in America. The problem is, he does not want to remain in America. He feels an indefinable urge to go back to India, much to the amazement of his friends, and the consternation of family members. He is himself unable to find any particular reason for his longing.
