  • Description

The Upanishads, by Eknath Easwaran, is a reliable and inspiring translation of the ancient Indian wisdom texts.

    Summary of the Book

Enlightened sages share flashes of insight in the Upanishads - the results of their inquiry into consciousness itself. In astonishing visions, they experience a transcendent reality and teach us that each of us, each ‘Self’, is eternal, deathless, and one with the creator of the universe. This title includes an overview of the cultural and historical setting, with chapter introductions, notes, and a Sanskrit glossary. Easwaran understands the relevance of the Upanishads to the modern reader. Each Upanishad appeals in different ways to different reader. Towards the end of the book, Easwaran asserts that the Upanishads belong not just to Hindus, but they are India’s precious legacy dedicated to all of humanity, and in that spirit, they are offered in this title.

There are in total a 108 know Upanishads (many more have been lost in time), that were composed during a period ranging between 2500 BC and 800 BC. Out of these 108 Upanishads, 11 are considered to be “Principal” not becaus...

    Good One

Very Informative and a good start to know more about Upanishads.
The translations are good, may be better if the actual sanskrit version was also included.
I would recommend this book for those who are keen to know about Upanishads but not sure where to start. This book will server as the jumping board .

    An introductory book on Upanishads

The book is not a literal translation of the original Upanishads, it's more like the presentation of different concepts from different Upanishads in form of a summary in 300 pages. Short and precise, the book tries to lay down the core essence of the Upanishads. The author achieves a bit but much more could have been done.
Books by Sri Aurobindo on same subjects are a much better read and really brings forth the essence and vitality of Vedas.
Go for Sri Aurobindo's explanations, essays and a...

    Learning the Upanishads

The book is well written. I am right now in my first reading of the book and I already feel that this book will need a few more readings to begin understanding the concepts of Self, Love, Life and how Upanishads can guide the reader in all aspects of life. The verses written in the book feel difficult to make sense but I am hoping the accompanying text will help me understanding them. Will update this review after I am done with the book.
