best piece i read in 2011

It is probably going to go down as one of the classics of the great indian literature scene. The prose style writing, for which Mr Tejpal is famous, is flawless, the story though not unique has been well formulated and detailed. THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ BY AN INDIAN AUTHOR THIS YEAR>!!

A dark, compelling, genre-defying book

There are books or stories that you'd enjoy reading. And there are those with what many would call a "message" - something you'd take back when you emerge from the world that the text creates.
'The Valley of Masks' is none of the above.
It is a dark tale - not of evil, necessarily - but of a world where human virtues are fine-tuned and made flawless, only to unravel a deeper, darker understanding of human nature - as it is, and as it ought to be.

Banal. Tacky plot and characters.

I have read almost first fifty pages of this book. And do not really feel like continuing. Plot looks like a drag about some fictitious ideal world with some sort of refined principle of life and existence. It is not a complete copy however plot idea looks like inspired from books like Anthem(Ayn Rand) and 1984(George Orwell). Naming of characters is so tacky like Aum, Arjun, Bheem and later some robotic names like RZ546 blah blah....

I have read other two books by the author,(story of my a...

very graphic, very dark, outstanding writing!

it's a rather unconventional book written in absolutely compelling, lucid language. it's difficult to tell what the book is about... all you can do is actually start reading it and feel yourself pulled into the dark corridors of the valley of masks... yes, at times character descriptions and plot elements seem to be going nowhere... but have patience, and it all pays off in the end in a tragic yet satisfying way... read it!

Brilliant narrative, perfect tale

I do not read many books but I hover around the local landmark's book section say when I'm waiting for the movies to begin just a floor above or when I'm looking for graphic novels to take with me on long trips. During one such time I was looking around the Indian books section to see what dismayingly unoriginal stuff we'd produced this year. The cover of the Valley of the Masks, which is the cover that you see here on flipkart, the face on the covering hands struck me. The title did that eve...
