Description
Take a pencil and make 6-8 valley-like `V'-shaped notches, starting from the end which has the eraser. With the help of a stopper, place a "Newton's Disc" spinner through a pin and stick the pin in the eraser. Holding the pencil as far away from the notches as possible with one hand, and with the other holding an ice-cream stick / skewer firmly, rub the stick/skewer on the notches and observe the disc spin! This is an age-old Native American folk toy called "gee-haw whammy diddle", which has fascinated scientists for decades. Why do random vibrations create perfect circular motion? Is there a way to change the direction of the spinner? If so, why does it change direction? Bonus: Gravity – Spinning Magnet. Ring magnets behave fascinatingly when inserted into any metal rod that is magnetic. Here, we use a cycle spoke as the rod and notice the wonderful behaviour of the magnets as they spin down the spoke! This causes vibrations at the bottom of the spoke, where a cardboard spinner spins rapidly as the magnets descend!
