For the ones like me who have little grasp of bengali language this translated piece helps us know our roots better & respect it all over again..

Get lost in an era of conflict, an era of rediscovery, an era of rebirth. Historical characters mingle with fictitious ones. a great reading experience. it will stay with you for a long time.
You will find yourself laughing and crying with the characters. The translation is smooth and lively. Though, I havent read the original Bengali version, but it doesnt feel like a translation. Must read.

Sunil Gangopadhyay's Those Days can be called a genre in itself. It will be myopic to categorise the book as historical fiction. Gangopadhyay has brought to life through his imagination and words Calcutta during 1840-70. As a Bengali and as an Indian, I am familiar with many of the protagonists in the book, but I am guilty of incomplete knowledge and hearsay. The author forces you to cleanse your mind of preconceived perceptions and takes you on a rollicking journey through the initial years ...

This book is the best way to know Calcutta. Coincidentally, I started reading the book at the same time when I shifted to Calcutta. Reading about the history of Calcutta and bumping into the places mentioned, a brilliant experience.
One of the very few novels where the line between history and fiction is not traceable. Everything seems history, everything seems fiction. I'm in love with it.

Bought the book from Delhi Book fair..Truly mind blowing....The gripping of the novel is so excellent that i did not feel monotonous while reading...The author described all the characters deeply..This is the one of my best novel so far...588 pages worth reading...

I have read this book's bengali version named Shei Somoy. I loved the book. Thus I gave it's English version to my non bengali boyfriend. He loved the book as well. This way we shared the joy even though our mother tongue don't match. And this happened only because of the flawlessness of the English translation. It didn't seem mechanical.

If you are not so good in English,than please don't buy it. you need a dictionary for all line's
