  • Description

To The Lighthouse is a philosophical introspective novel by eminent modernist Virginia Woolf.

    Summary of the Book

Beginning with the Ramsays' summer house, the story watches the changes in the family through many years. James, the son, asks if they can visit the lighthouse the next day. When Mrs. Ramsay says they should be able to, Mr. Ramsay denies her prediction of good weather. The novel favours more thoughts and observations rather than dialogue and action, and explores themes of loss, subjectivity and perception. The years pass, and the family comes together after the great war, and the changes in them are apparent. Once again they question whether they can journey to the lighthouse, and the answers they find there are not the kind they once expected.

    About Virginia Woolf

Adeline Virginia Woolf was an English novelist and one of the principal modernists of the last century. She won much acclaim for her novels: Mrs Dalloway and A Room Of One's Own.

A noted feminist, Virginia became a principal figure in London's literary societies and in the influential Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals.

    • Virginia Woolf (Adeline) 1882-1941, was the daughter of Sir Leslie Stephen and his second wife, Julia Duckworth. Most of her early education was provided by her parents at their Hyde Park Gate home. After her father’s death in 1904, Virginia moved to 46, Gordon Square, Bloomsbury, with her sister Vanessa and her brothers Thoby and Adrian. Virginia’s new house was the original meeting-place of the famous literary group ‘The Bloomsbury Group’ which included people like Leonard Woolf, Lytton Strachey, D. Grant, E.M. Forster, J.M. Keynes and Virginia herself along with her brothers and sister Vanessa Bell formed the nucleus of the group. In 1905 she began to write for the Times Literary Supplement, a connection which lasted almost until her death. She married Leonard Woolf in 1912 and completed her first novel, The Voyage Out in the same year, which was published in 1915. She had meanwhile experienced one of the bouts of acute mental breakdowns from which she had suffered since her mother’s death in 1895.

The best that I have read

"To the lighthouse" is a journey into the minds of the characters. With a minimal dialog usage, no apparent plot, the story proceeds so unconventionally that the reader might find it a little hard to follow the text.
"Stream of consciousness" that is... Thoughts are penned down the way they arise in mind.
This is sheer brilliance. Woolf was a heretic and that is why she was a member of the Bloomsbury Group at so young an age. It takes courage and creativity to think out of the box.

    Very Good

I received the book in perfect condition, though I didn't got any bookmark (which I was expecting ☹️). This book from Penguin's mordern classic collection is an annotated form of Woolf's work (I'm looking forward to read this for second time😅). Anyone looking for a mordenist novel, "To the lighthouse" is an amazing option! Overall I'm satisfied with Flipkart's service!

Strictly for hardcore literature buffs :)

In short: This book does not have a well laid out story. Read this book if you are yourself going to write a book. You will get tonnes of material on human psyche, expressions, thoughts, feelings, character-contrasts between man and woman.
Its very descriptive in nature and hardly contains conversations between characters. Not for people looking for a conventional novel with an entertaining story.
