Lychee (Litchi chinensis) is a small, tropical fruit that is part of the soapberry family. It has a rough or warty skin that can be bright red, dull red, purple-red, or pinkish red, depending on the cultivar. The fruit is round, egg-shaped, or heart-shaped, and can be 3–5 cm in diameter and weigh 16–35 g. The skin is thick and leathery, and you have to peel it off to reveal the soft, fragrant, edible flesh inside. The flesh is sweet and juicy, with a flavor that some say is like a cross between a grape and a rose. The fruit also has a single large seed that is chestnut brown to dark brown and 1–3.3 cm long.
