Simply awesome

It is another mesmerising work from the pulitzer prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri. It is the simplicity of her writing which draws the readers towards her work. This book is also no exception and the stories can easily be related to the real life. One must read it once at least.
I got this book at a mind blowing deal from flipkart. Thank you flipkart for making my shopping experience so nice.

Tracing the human emotions.

Lahiri at her literary best. The collected short stories follow the lives of second generation Bengali immigrants to the United States. The stories are rich on insights into the minds of the characters, a style so typical of her. A very good weekend read or over the occasional afternoon siesta. People who are in awe of the complexity of the human mind and relationships will certainly enjoy it.

Excellent - like her other books

The thing about Jhumpa's books' is that it explores the mindset of the characters in a very fascinating way. To familiar readers, Unaccustomed Earth would be a satisfying read. Part 1 of the book has disconnected short stories. Although the overall theme of the book is around the lives of Bengali immigrants settled in US and their adjustments, each story concentrates on a few subthemes - family ties, love, loneliness, relationships etc.
The second part of the book - Hema and Kaushik is where ...

A soul-stirring and brutally realistic book

I have rated this book as 4.5 out of 5, and you need to know that I am not a lenient critic by any means. 'Unaccustomed Earth' has been written in a very simple language which is comprehensible even to a 12-year old. It is the way Jhumpa plays with words and with emotions that you cannot help develop a strong respect for her.

You will love this book, but more than that, you will end up respecting the author for the way she can peep into your heart and into your life. At one time, I felt th...

Jhumpa culls out a few other gems

Jhumpa engages you again… taking you into Bengali immigrants’ homes, into their lives, giving you a sneak preview of their relationships, lifting the veil off their hearts. He style is easy and minimalistic- that makes it layered. The Hema and Kaushik stories are very well crafted.
But I would love to see Jhumpa break out of her mould of what seemed to be familiar space- what seems autobiographical.
Do read it, if you have liked her earlier books – Interpreter of Maladies and the Namesake

Another story that will live long...

Jhumpa Lahiri happens to be my favourite writer. Though will not say that 'Unaccustomed Earth' was her best, yet the book would easily go down as her best after after 'Interpreter of Maladies'. The second part of this book 'Hema and Kaushik' was poignant and yet a superbly crafted story of human relations and unspoken human emotions. By the time I finished the story, I knew I was crying. After a long time a book made me cry. The characters have an earthy feel and the language is like a flowin...

Amazing !

Jhumpa Lahri is an amazing writer. While reading the book you forget that you are reading fiction. She makes you believe that the characters are people you already knew and now are getting to the other facets to them. Amazing read. Don't miss this book by a very talented writer.
