Dr. Bhaskar Narayan Deshpande a Magsaysay Award Winner goes back to his village after a gap of 40 years. He tries to reconstruct his boyhood experiences with all the characters and their lives around him. The present makes him to do things for the village he had forgotten about all these years. It was not his Gandhian freedom fighter nor his feudal uncle or romantic elder brother' but his mother' who motivated him to be a doctor for the service of the poor. She believes that is the only way to appease the Vastupurush – the Gardian spirit of the house. Bhaskar is indebted to another lower caste woman Krishnatai – his brother's belowed – who was enlightened enough to support his mother's dream. Bhaskar is now backing home to fulfill his mother's wish.
