Dr.Karan Singh was born into the then princely state of Jammu and Kashmir and was catapulted into political life in 1949-as Regent upto 1952,as Sadri-i-Riyasat from 1952 to 1965, and as a Governer from 1965 to 1967. In 1967 he was inducted into the Union Cabinet. He was Member of Parliment for the next 18 years and held several major Cabinet posts. Dr Karan Singh is active in a number of connected fields: as a Chairman of the Temple of Understanding, an international interfaith organisation; as President of the People's Commission of Environment and Development: as a President of the India International Centre: as a Chairman of the Auroville Foundation and as a member of the Club of Rome, the Club of Budapest, and the UNESCO International Commission on education for the Twenty-first Cen
