Veronica (Gujarati) is the Gujarati translation of author Paulo Coelho’s novel Veronika Decides To Die. It is about the life of a young girl, who decides to die.

      Summary Of The Book

Veronika is a twenty-four year old girl who leads her life working as a librarian in Ljubljana in Slovenia. One day, Veronika feels overwhelmed by the triviality of her life. In an emotional moment, she decides to commit suicide. She consumes sleeping pills and passes out in her house. When she wakes up, she is in Villete, a mental asylum.

Around her there are a variety of patients. Some of them are Mari, a lawyer who suffers from repeated panic attacks, Zedka, a mother and housewife who has chronic depression and Eduard, a schizophrenic artist. Veronika tries to reconcile with her surroundings. Slowly, she breaks out of her shy, introverted personality and starts exploring her surroundings. Eventually, she befriends the inmates and listens to their stories. The asylum starts becoming her second home. She begins to enjoy the tag of a “patient’ and tries to shed her inhibitions. She realizes she has one more chance to decide to live life, that too on her own terms.

What feelings does Veronika have for a fellow patient? What does the doctor at the asylum reveal to her? How does she react to this new piece of information? Will she be able to come to terms with this revelation? This book answers these questions and more.

Veronica (Gujarati) establishes the stunning unpredictability in a young girl’s life. The story is said to bear close resemblance with the book’s author Paulo Coelho’s early life, particularly his repeated residence at the mental asylums.

The novel has been translated into 46 languages. It was made into a film in Hollywood and Pakistan, and even adapted into a stage play. It has also served as the inspiration for various song lyrics by several rock bands.
