The Chrysanthemum is a rather easy plant to grow since it can tolerate humidity, heat and moderately warm temperature. You can directly sow the seeds in a airy place with good sun exposure. Soil should be collected in a garden pot mixed with well rotted cow dung or manure. Broadcast the seeds over the soil bed and cover it with a thin layer of sieved sand to allow germination. Maintain a distance of 1.0 feet between the plants. Sprinkle little water and then as per requirement keeping the soil moist. Flowering starts after 40-45 days post transplant which continues for 80-90 days depending on the variety. GROWING REQUIREMENTS DISBUDDING & STAKING Large blooms can be maintained by removing the side shoots. Also Chrysanthemum tend to bend from the stems due to weight of the flower bulbs which can be avoided by staking the plants with a good support. SOIL Loamy, well drained soil with a neutral pH of 6.5. Chrysanthemum are hardy plants and usually do not require any additional fertilizers and can thrive in the right environment without any fertilizers. SPOT It is crucial that Chrysanthemum are protected from becoming too wet since they are susceptible to mildew. Ensure that the place you choose to grow these plants has sufficient drainage and good air circulation. TEMPERATURE Maintain a slightly moist soil with temperature ranging between 19 to 24°C(65 to 75°F) until germination. WATERING Regular watering keeps the flowers healthy. However, too much watering can induce fungal diseases. So watch out for over watering. HOW TO HARVEST Depending upon the local climate, Chrysanthemum take 3 to 4 months to bloom. Generally, the flowering season lasts from July to Feb. For cut flowers, you can clip the stem 10 cm above ground and place them in water to keep them fresh.
