Vyakti Aani Vyalli (Marathi), written by Purushottam Laxman Deshpande, features 20 character sketches based on real-life incidents and characters, written in the Marathi language.
Summary Of The Book
In Vyakti Aani Vyalli (Marathi), readers will be drawn in by a variety of character sketches of people from different walks of life.
The stories in this book were written between 1944 and 1968, and therefore depict issues that were prevalent during those times. For instance, Deshpande’s Bhaiyya Nagpurkar, was one of the first characters the author created. Nagpurkar is depicted as a wealthy Brahmin man who is often mistaken as someone who is a Muslim, and admires Gandhi. He likes music and drinking, but does not drink when Gandhi fasts.
Vyakti Aani Vyalli (Marathi) also depicts people one would meet in normal circumstances of life. Characters such as Paropakari Gampu, Namu Parit, and Narayan, capture the mundaneness of everyday life. For instance, Namu Parit is a humble washer man. He purposely destroys buttons so that he could use his customers’ clothing for himself. Parit possesses reprehensible habits, which do not seem to affect his super ego. Lakhu Risbud is another character who dreams of creating a change in the world through his writing. Unfortunately, life’s circumstances force him into an assistant editor’s role at an unknown magazine.
Vyakti Aani Vyalli (Marathi) earned Deshpande the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1965.
