    Description
    • 53% of the 6 billion+ worlds population lives within 200 kilometers of the coastline.
    • 1 billion people live within a height of 20 meters above the mean sea level.
    • 21 of the 33 mega cities of the world lie along the coasts.
    • Tourism is the fastest growing sector in the world economy. Coastal areas comprise of the largest number of tourist destinations.
    • 35 million+ people worldwide rely on fishing as a source of livelihood.
    • More than half of the worlds industries lie along the coasts.
    • Contribution of coastal areas to a coastal countrys GDP is as high as 95% in some cases.

The worlds economic and social heart lies along its coasts. The world is where the coast is! Global warming induced climate change will change the way we look at our coasts. Rising sea levels will displace millions. The entire fishing industry will collapse. Coastal agriculture will take a beating. Unpredictable and unprecedented changes in the weather will wreak havoc. Existing infrastructural facilities that form the backbone of our economy such as ports, industries and power plants will become obsolete. Economies will collapse and diseases would rise. Lawlessness will prevail. Humanity would meet its doom! Can we prevent a doomsday like scenario? Yes can we do it in the present system? No In the present system of a capitalistic selfish society, no amount of measures taken to adapt to or mitigate the effects of climate change would be enough. The present system looks at short term monetary benefits ignoring the issue from a long term humanitarian perspective. The need of the hour is a total overhaul of the system. A new socio-economic modelthe society without selfishness.

MLAs, Corporators and Mayors please read!

The suggestions in this book on how to save Mangalore from annihilation are excellent. It may not be a great work of literature, but this book is a must read, particularly because it explains such a complicated issue in such a simple manner, using ordinary language. The writer style is impressive, as one feels as though he is speaking to you while reading the book.

Mangalore definitely needs to wake up

Royston Fernandes has given a long awaited wake up call to all those living on the coasts not only in Mangalore but anywhere in the world. The book includes original research and statistics that provide a very well documented case on a need for change as far as protecting ourselves from climate change is concerned. While many may object to Royston's views on the establshment of a new and a better order, I'd like to believe that the author is certainly heading in the right direction and that t...

A book that every man living on the coast must read!

Royston’s book – ‘Wake up Mangalore...or be damned!’ is indeed a wake-up call to not only Mangalore, but to every other place on Earth. From the feedback I have received, and from my own reading, I can affirmatively say that this book forces one to think about the ecological issue, which otherwise people are usually unconcerned about. What I liked most was that he argues for a change in the capitalist system and calls for the establishment of a new world order.
