Walking With Lions: Tales From A Diplomatic Past is a collection of 50 articles that appeared in Mail Today, recalling memorable incidents in the long diplomatic career of K. Natwar Singh.

    Summary Of The Book

The book has an interesting collection of stories involving politicians, diplomats, leaders and some celebrities from the art and entertainment industry. These articles were published in Mail Today between 2011 and 2012.

Walking With Lions: Tales From A Diplomatic Past spans the globe in its coverage of intriguing personalities. The title itself is drawn from a very interesting episode involving an Indian diplomat in Ethiopia. Back then, the Ethiopian etiquette demanded that ambassadors who presented their credentials to the emperor should be accompanied by two lions. This naturally made most ambassadors uneasy.

When the Indian Ambassador R. G. Rajwade presented his credentials, he walked straight ahead showing no discomfiture. When asked by the Chief of Protocol whether he was aware of the lions behind him, Rajwade replied that his eyes had been fixed on the Imperial Emperor and he had noticed nothing else. The episode earned the respect of the Ethiopians for the Indian diplomat.

There is a hilarious anecdote about Ugandan Dictator Idi Amin and his purported desire to rename his country after himself. One of his ministers informed him that it would cause embarrassment. The people of the country of Cyprus were called Cypriots. If Uganda were called Idi, then, the country's citizens would be called Idiots.

The book is peppered with anecdotes about many leaders like Indira Gandhi, Morarji Desai, Fidel Castro, Zia-ul-Haq, Richard Nixon and Yasser Arafat. Also included is a story about an interesting encounter between Godman Chandraswami and Margaret Thatcher, before she became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The author also recollects with respect and admiration, his encounters with leaders like C. Rajagopalachari, Nelson Mandela, and some personalities from the non-political arena like Don Bradman, M. F. Hussain and Dev Anand.

Walking With Lions: Tales From A Diplomatic Past is a very interesting read, and details incidents from the life of a high profile diplomat and politician, who has had a long and successful career.

Not as good as other books of Natwar Singh

First impression - this book should be renamed as 'Walking With Nehru Dynasty'. On almost every page of this book you will find the author showing his loyalty to Nehru dynasty. I expected that writer being a former IFS and Foreign Minister will give more insights into foreign policy matters but he only provided details of his meetings with foreign heads and famous people. Very light book, you can take it to your holidays and read it. Don't expect too much.

    Witty Remark and Intellectual Mind

A good book to read . It gives enough data about modern world leader, dictator, situation. Fan of Indira Gandhi also given a chance to buy it and read it. Author has good style to project reality and situation in his light heart mode. One of My Famous Chapter in this book is Counter with Reagon and our officers intellectualism . Curious about IFS officer's world attracted me to read it.

    Plainly Informative.

The book is a recollection of the author's experiences as an IFS officer and later on as a cabinet minister. Highly informative, the book gives us accounts of incidents that are almost unknown to the outside world. However, the book is not so interesting and is best suited for a light reading. The author's praise of Mrs. Indira Gandhi is a bit overdo.

    light reading - bad sequencing

Highly informative. chapters could have been arranged chronological. great insight into how the diplomatic world works and protocols are religiously followed. a further insight into how diplomatic negotiations take place would have added value to this work instead of a mere pass time reading.

    Light reading

Interesting light reading. But Natwar Singh's liking for Gandhi family and his dislike for some others comes out quite clearly in some of the narrations - a pity for he could at least have given some objectivity to the writing as it would be in public domain. Nothing intellectual but it gives some interesting information and nostalgia to those who grew up seeing some of the world leaders in the news reels at the cinemas and in the magazines and sometimes in the DD. It remains at the end a ...

    Worth a read anytime!

    K. Natwar Singh is always a delightful read. This title is a selection from his diplomatic sojourn all over the world. "Walking with Lions", one didn't know how the foreign potentates tested the mettle of Indian diplomats. The shenanigans of Margaret Thatcher with an Indian soothsayer was ever more interesting. Does India's future PM has one of his own?
