Winter Of the World - truly WOW!

There are many reasons to buy and read Winter of the World by Ken Follet, cheap thrills isn't one of them. For those who mightn't know, this is the second installment of Follet's Century Trilogy. It picks up where Fall of the Giants(FOG) left off and seamlessly traces the lives of the much loved protagonists from the book and their families through the Great Depression, the second world war and the beginning of the cold war.

After having read FOG and finding it to be in the league of Pillar'...

nothing like the first but yet gripping1

the first part of a trilogy like this one i feel is always the best... but not to take away credit from follett, he had me on the edge of the seat in many parts of the book... in the first half in the lead up to the war there are so many characters that if u haven't read the prequel then u wont understand the relationship which the characters share... the most interesting part of the book is the description of the war and the heartbreak caused due to pearl harbor... the characters of maud, ll...

Well written ...but not engrossing enough...

In this sequel to the Fall of Giants, Ken Follett continues from where he left off in the first book and weaves his plot and sets it around 1933, when Adolf Hitler was on the verge of becoming the undisputed Fuhrer of Germany. He deftly touches upon historic events starting from the burning of Reichstag, the Spanish Civil war, and culminating in the great victory of the Allied Forces in the 2nd World War.
Although the book is well written and the characters well etched out, I found it a tri...

Five Families and the Second World War

Winter of the World takes off (almost) from the point at which Fall of Giants ended--with Walter and Maud's family in Berlin. While Walter fights for a democratic Germany against the forces of Nazism, as witnessed by his daughter Carla and Lloyd Williams, son of Maud's friend, Ethel, his son is drawn deeper into the Nazi movement. Lloyd's stint in Berlin, during which he witnesses the burning of the Reichstag, lead to his involvement in anti-Nazi activities back home in Britain, culminating i...

Ken Follett Winter World

Ken Follett has wonderfully brought out the sufferings under went by people during world war in East Berlin before its unification with West Berlin. I have read about all books from the author. This one I got from Flipkart for reasonable price. There are 2 differnet editions with the total number of pages a little different. I ordered both and found both having same story. One I presented to my Aunti who is also a voracious reader of books after warning the explicit way of writing, by the a...

A great read!!!

As a hardcore Ken Follett fan and an even bigger fan of the Century trilogy,I just couldn't wait to get my hand on the second installment i.e. Winter of the world. Thanks to Flip kart for shipping the product in time without tipping off my patience and as always Follett was at his best. The mammoth story scaling continents and characters captures and pulls us into the story line quickly. The book cannot be explained..just like Fall of Giants.. it can only be experienced. So go and grab your c...

Good Read

Sequel to "The Fall of the Giants", this novel sketches the events of Second World War. The story is interesting and people who have read the earlier book will be happy that the characters of the previous novel are having a new life after the first world war. But only for a brief time when the Second World War begins. The novel tries to highlight the problems in Communism, Nazism and Fascism by using the characters like Erik, Clara, Werner, Volodov etc. Nazism and Communism is dreaded not jus...

Boring

This one is not as gripping as first one "Fall of Giants". Extremely predictable and cliched. If one has to treat this as a chronicle of WW II the author has certainly not done justice to Holocaust and killing of 6 million plus jews.
Convenient intrepretation of role of different players - so we are told US and UK were the only heroes.
Hope the last one is not a one-sided story on cold war, where US is the hero and Russia the fall guy.
