  • Description
Working a Democratic Constitution tells a very human story of how the social, political and day-to-day lived realities of the Indian people has been reflected in, and in turn directed the course of, constitutional reforms in the country. Through the post independence euphoria to the turbulent years of Indira Gandhi's 'Emergency' and Rajiv Gandhi's brief period of power, the way in which the constitution has evolved to suit the changing needs of the times isan important indicator of India's successful experience with democracy.Granville Austin is one of the world's leading experts on the Indian constitution. Since his classic work The Indian Constitution: Cornerstone of a Nation (OUP, 1966), he has been working on this long-awaited book, which not only presents archival sources, but also first-hand interviews with and rare documentation by many of the key political and legal figures of the last fifty years. With its wide historical sweep, and meticulously detailed research, this is Austin's magnum opusdescribed by Fali Nariman as a 'great and compassionate work'. The clarity and elegance of Austin's writing makes this book not only a necessary but a pleasurable read for anyone interested in comparative constitutional law and the recent political history of India, and for students, teachers and researchers of the subject.

A MUST READ FOR ANY POLITY BUFF

The history of Indian polity from its inception in 1950 to the end of Mrs Gandhi's regime in 1985, is being covered extensively and meticulously in every details in this well researched volume by the American civil servant Granville Austin. The survey doesn't strictly restrict itself to this 38 years window, because to quote Austin himself,"constitutional developments neither began in 1950 nor ceased in 1985" and he provides enough background before its inauguration and peeps back at important...

The finest book on the Indian State ever written

After Jawaharlal Nehru and throughout the tenure of Indira Gandhi, the relationship between the Judiciary and the Parliament/Executive was tenuous.

Granville Austin's "Working a Democratic Constitution" provides an unbiased representation of facts and events without being sycophantic / taking ideological sides. Austin is unafraid to call a spade a spade, and at the same time recognizes that every human being (including Mrs. Gandhi) while having several flaws, also contributed to making demo...

    Footnotes like speedbreakers

"Having to read footnotes resembles having to go downstairs to answer the door while in the midst of making love." This book is not for light reading. Too many footnotes even when unnecessary.

    Intellectual Delight

A polity equivalent of 'India After Gandhi'. In terms of coverage detail and conceptual clarity that it fetches above par than the majority of well known books written on the subject. A must read for those seeking clarity and evolutionary insight in the way the three pillars of our democracy has negotiated their power relationships, mostly democratically, consequently strengthening the seamless strands which are intertwined in our constitution.

Great Read..Especially for Law students with a Constitutional Fetish

The great thing about this book is that Austin somehow obtained the letter sent to the then Law Secretary by Mr. VKT Chari who was the Advocate General for the State of Madras..His Idea was to Introduce Schedule 9 to the constitution which would make enactments immune from fundamental rights...Superb...
