  • Description

Wake Up Mangalore or Be Damned!, by Royston Fernandes, discusses how a major socio-economic reform is the need of the hour in the coastal town, in order to build a society without selfishness.

    Summary of the Book

This title discusses how immense the contribution of the coastal areas to the economy and diversity of several nations in the world is. It includes tourism, agriculture, fishing and cuisine among several other factors. The author foresees the impending difficulties that the coastal line might have to go through. The rising sea levels as an aftermath of global warming might adversely affect vegetation and coastal agriculture. People might have to be moved, fishing industry might collapse, erratic weather conditions can wreak havoc, and infrastructural facilities like ports and power plants can become obsolete. Diseases might start plaguing these places and the economy will crumble down if we still ignore the possibility of these negative changes. Fernandes tries to delve into the ways of mitigating such a scenario – a complete overhaul of the existing system.

MLAs, Corporators and Mayors please read!

The suggestions in this book on how to save Mangalore from annihilation are excellent. It may not be a great work of literature, but this book is a must read, particularly because it explains such a complicated issue in such a simple manner, using ordinary language. The writer style is impressive, as one feels as though he is speaking to you while reading the book.

Mangalore definitely needs to wake up

Royston Fernandes has given a long awaited wake up call to all those living on the coasts not only in Mangalore but anywhere in the world. The book includes original research and statistics that provide a very well documented case on a need for change as far as protecting ourselves from climate change is concerned. While many may object to Royston's views on the establshment of a new and a better order, I'd like to believe that the author is certainly heading in the right direction and that t...

A book that every man living on the coast must read!

Royston’s book – ‘Wake up Mangalore...or be damned!’ is indeed a wake-up call to not only Mangalore, but to every other place on Earth. From the feedback I have received, and from my own reading, I can affirmatively say that this book forces one to think about the ecological issue, which otherwise people are usually unconcerned about. What I liked most was that he argues for a change in the capitalist system and calls for the establishment of a new world order.
