It gives me immense pleasure to forward this book to students of
experimental psychology.
Practicals of experimental psychology are essential for
understanding the discipline of scientific psychology. Without such
objective thinking no research can be done. At any cost importance
of practicals should not be underestimated and practicals should be
wholeheartedly conducted by the students. Progress of psychology as
a sound science is impossible without it.
These experiments are included in various syllabi like graduation,
post-graduation of psychology, and education. It is possible to
conduct some of these experiments with the help of computers.
However, for understanding development of basic models and
theories through various stages, it is essential to develop the
important skills of experiments. Some simple experiments are also
discussed so that they can be introduced in junior colleges though
they may not be included in the syllabi.
Today’s students are tomorrow’s teachers. Hence, there should be
no ambiguity in understanding the purpose, procedure, preparation
and conduct of the experiment. It is essential that they should be
aware of even minor points regarding preparing and arranging the
material required to conduct the experiments. Students should
develop insight regarding all these things and their impact on
dependent variable of the experiment. For example while pasting the
plain paper to the memory drum, if it is not done in perfect way , the
indicators of glue will give extra hint for remembering the stimulus
adjacent to it. It can play the role of isolation and the whole shape of
serial learning curve may change substantially. Minor details
regarding how to use various instruments in the laboratory, how to
prepare lists of learning material, various operations of the
instrument, adjusting time etc should be carefully considered. Every
precaution should be taken to avoid such mistakes. Experimental
psychology practicals demand lot of devotion, time and energy.
It is beyond imagination to cover all the possible experiments.
One can generate multiple experiments on the basis of various
theories and models. Hence, these are only representative
experiments which are generally conducted and can be conducted in
psychology laboratory of most of the colleges. Once the student or
teacher gets interested in experiments she will be able to generate
number of new experimental plans. For example we may change the
independent variable, or dependent variable and add or reduce some
dimensions, introduce a different method of taking trials, giving or
hiding some information, changing the position of rest period, and
think of different new ways of conducting experiments. Obviously, it
is essential to have sound knowledge of theory and previous findings
of research for that.
