Summary of the Book

A group of explorers and scientists set out to investigate reports of a giant underwater sea creature that has been spotted in the Pacific ocean. Among them are Professor Aronnax, a French marine biologist, Ned Land, a Canadian harpooner, and Conseil, Aronnax’s faithful servant. The ship they are aboard, the US Navy Frigate Abraham Lincoln, is attacked by the “sea creature” that they think is a giant narwhal. The three passengers are hurled off the ship by the impact, and they are taken “into the creature”. To their surprise, the creature is, in fact, one of the most advanced submarines in existence. And its captain is a man so nefarious that he has become a part of Science Fiction for all time, the indomitable Captain Nemo.

Jules Verne was a French novelist best associated with his books Journey to the Centre of the Earth, In Search of the Castaways, The Mysterious Island and Around the World in Eighty Days.

The above title has adapted into several films over the years, including one notable version by Richard Fleischer, produced by Walt Disney. It stars Kirk Douglas as Ned Land and James Mason as Captain Nemo.
