Summary of the Book

The book starts off with introducing the reader to the idea that two people can have varying points of view. Understanding this is pivotal to understanding Covey's principles of effectiveness. Covey explains that in order to become effective, one must cease dependence and master oneself truly. True independence follows as a result of being proactive, beginning with a destination in mind and prioritizing tasks. Only after self-mastery, the book explains, is one ready to progress to work well with others. And working with others is pivotal in Covey's theory because winning as a team progresses one's goals further than doing so alone does. The final habit captures the main principle of Covey's message: sharpen the saw. Only through continuous improvement can one progress further and see goals clearer.

Stephen Richards Covey was an American writer, businessman, trainer and keynote speaker. He has also written: First Things First, Principle-Centered Leadership, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families, The 8th Habit and The Leader In Me — How Schools and Parents Around the World Are Inspiring Greatness, One Child at a Time.

A graduate of the University of Utah, Covey obtained his MBA from Harvard University and his Doctorate of Religious Education from Brigham Young University. A Phi Beta Kappa fraternity member, he was a professor at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University at the time of his death.
